Peter Svidler vs Sergey Karjakin - Final Piala Dunia Catur 2015 Baku

Chess World Cup Baku once again produce drama in semi final leg. In the tie break session, Sergey Karjakin was facing very tough challenger from Pavel Eljanov. All tie break games seems to be ended in decisive results. Eljanov was the first to score points in first rapid games, then equalized by Karjakin. Karjakin then got the upper hand in the third games (10 minutes rapid), and then the fourth game looks like Eljanov going to equalize. But in total winning position, Eljanov keep turning off the dead blow, playing rather safe move instead of (obvious) killing move. The game ended in dramatic threefold repetitions claimed by Karjakin. In a total winning positions, Eljanov wanted to gain some times by playing moves, but then it was a blundered because the position repeated exactly three times.

Sergey Karjakin going to final round, to challenge Peter Svidler. This is the third all Russian finals (2011 - Svidler - Grischuk, 2013 Kramnik - Andreikin). The second final for Peter Svidler. For Karjakin, he has his third semi final and now break the record by advance to final.

Partai Catur Sergey Karjakin vs Pavel Eljanov 1/2-1/2, Baku 2015

Semi Final Piala Dunia 2015 Baku - Chess World Cup

Chess World Cup 2015 enter its two final phases, the semi finals. As known before, Pavel Eljanov  eliminated Hikaru Nakamura quite easily. The first game of their match saw a perfect play from Eljanov,  slowly outplaying Nakamura with Catalan game.   The ending was a misery for Nakamura that even two checkmates was pardoned by Pavel Elojanov before Nakamura duly resigned. The second one saw Nakamura as white tried hard to equal the score, but Eljanov simply in solid hedgehog type of defensive and its ended in draw. The other board saw Anish Giri defeated his "Grand Chess Tour" compatriot, and declared himself the only defender of the highest society for semi final, jokingly.

Then there are hot games on the tie breakers. As expected, Wei Yi vs Peter Svidler was a popcorn-orientated show. Both play chess games that surprisingly entertaining and understood by most amateur. Their three games ended in eye rising draws though. Peter Svidler was the one on upper hand in most games but the advantage simply not enough to created point. Only by the fourth tie break game (5 minutes blitz), Peter able to converted point after the young Chinese boy tired out. The pair was Shakhriyar Mamedyarov vs Karjakin. The host player resigned to give a way for Karjakin after intense games. Two Russian will be in semi finals. Semifinal pairings stats below, after Bahasa Indonesia section.

Wei Yi vs Peter Svidler  2.5-3.5
Hikaru Nakamura vs Pavel Eljanov  0.5-1.5
Sergey Karjakin  vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov  4.0-2.0
Anish Giri  vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave  1.5-0.5

Partai Catur Pavel Eljanov vs Hikaru Nakamura 1-0, Baku 2015

Partai Catur Wei Yi vs Peter Svidler 0-1, Baku 2015

(photo : official website)

We forgot that Peter Svidler is also one of ex World Cup champion. His fate is a little bit better compared to other "ex-s", Boris Gelfand, Gata Kamsky, Levon Aronian, Vladimir Kramnik... all say good bye many days ago!

Peter Svidler will meet ex-young star Anish Giri, who is now happily married. They played several times with Peter Svidler indeed having +1 score according to (limited) chessgames.com data. In Anish side, he is the one to "defend the high society of chess", after Hikaru Nakamura fallen in quarter final. He is indeed stronger favorite in this pairing, but everyone want to see repeated World Cup champion also!

11 Russia Sergey Karjakin  vs 26 Ukraine Pavel Eljanov

Karjakin is ex-Ukrainian, so he must known well Pavel Eljanov. Both are meet numerous times. Notably is their duel in World Cup 2013 which Karjakin won. Remember how in Baku 2015 karma works (Kramnik vs Andreikin etc.), the superior force is within Elojanov by now. Speaking of Earthling predictions, this one is the hard one. Pavel Eljanov having superb tournament of his life, starting 6/6 then his record is 8.5/10  in classical games of World Cup, only three draws versus Jakovenko and Nakamura. Both are struggling to enter the most top layer of chess hierarchy by winning this one and show up in the candidate.

World Cup 2015 Baku - Quarter Finals Pairings

Chess World Cup 2015 in Baku is reaching its quarter finals phase. As all know, 128 chess players from around the world joined this Knock Out tournament. Then we got only 16 players left as the rest were eliminated each round. In the last round 4 session, three big names were all knock outed. Major upset should be on Fabiano Caruana, who can't overcame Shakhriyar Mamedyarov opening strategy and then simply fall without much fight.

photos from official website

Partai Catur - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov vs Fabiano Caruana
World Cup (2015)    Indian Game: West Indian Defense (E61)   1-0

The other top seed eliminated is Wesley So. But he was defeated by worthy opponent, well, at least not so surprisingly. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave busted the ending where it was seemingly equal, but in round 4 game 2, Wesley So simply blunder that ending. Anish Giri as the #4 seed got more hassle to play against notable Anand's second, Radosław "Radek" Wojtaszek. They went into tie break, but Anish Giri won the rapid games 2-0 thus go to quarter final.

Eljanov defeated Jakovenko. Also in rapid games phase of tie break, but only in the second one he got the upper hand. Sergey Karjakin played with karma by eliminating hot dude Andreikin, who eliminated Karjakin two years ago. The score in rapid games between the two in tie break session is 1 1/2 - 1/2 in favor of Karjakin.

The big fight and show was on Ding Liren vs Wei Yi. As we remember, in the classical game both kungfu men exchange fist and kicks 1-1, defeating each other. Remember the crazy ending in the 2nd game :

Partai Catur : Wei Yi vs Ding Liren
World Cup (2015)  ·  Spanish Game: Closed. Martinez Variation (C78)  ·  1-0

With that win, Wei Yi and Ding Liren must spend one more day playing chess together in tie break round. Again their games are the most fascinating to watch, among others. In the two rapid games they trade draws. Next is two 10 minutes games, where the second one duly won by Wei Yi.

World Cup (2015)  English, Symmetrical (A34)  0-1

The Quarter finals pairings then see eight match:
Pairing babak perempat final Piala Dunia Catur 2015 di Baku:

16  Russia Peter Svidler vs 24 China Wei Yi
The most experience vs the youngest player. Peter Svidler should extremely careful to not become sacrificial lamb and stepping stone to Wei Yi. Judging from playing style, where Svidler is from old Sovyet school with all his Gruenfeld expertise, Wei Yi will face more positional player than his other opponents. They are indeed had exchange blow each other just few months ago, in Russia vs China match. Peter Svidler won that game.

Cruising to quarter finals are two favorites from "Grand Chess Tour" members. Nothing much to added except looking at the stats between the two, which is extensively available. Their last meeting in Sinquefield Cup 2015 ended in draw. Thinking about this, Maxime got upper hand that he "only" need to play two very familiar opponents (vs Wesley So in round 4).

19 Azerbaijan Shakhriyar Mamedyarov vs 11 Russia Sergey Karjakin
Not too much gap between the two. Sergey Karjakin is doing fine recently. He is proving that he also belong to elite world. On Mamedyarov side, he is taking the most the home turf as his power, as Kramnik said.  Both have many games history, over 46+ games with Mamedyarov looks like a trouble opponent for Karjakin.
