The First ASEAN Championship, exclusively for ASEAN chess player kick off on Boxing Day 2010. Five More Vietnam woman chess players storming the upper standing on Day 3/Round 6, all elo range from 2200 to 2300+. Indeed the Vietnamese are of a large crowd in this tournament. The tournament top seed however, WGM Irene K. Sukandar, stays on 3.5/6 point. Irene lost to WIM Nguyen Thi Mai Hung 2253 in round six, put her now on difficult task to finish within prize position. The current standing after round 6 :

Countdown in Singapore 2011

Just before the countdown we will welcome a new Woman Champion. On the Woman World Champ in Antioch, Hou Yifan succesfully climbed to semi, meet her contemporary most dangerous nemesis, Koneru Humpy and won. Of the other side is a little surprise, WGM Ruan Lufei defeat comrade GM Zhao Xue, and previously Harika Dronavali and Alexandra Kosteniuk!

All mamas going home early, the last standing Europeans were Ekateryna Lahno and Almira Skripchenko. I really hope our new Chess queen stays as long as they are for another 20 years! Good luck to Hou Yifan (meaning=extra ordinary) and Ruan Lufei (charming)!

But, in ASEAN region there is also another heat. Not that Indonesia + Cristian Gonzalez vs Malaysia, but in Singapore, they hold a countdown party 2011.

Singapore will be hosting ASEAN first championship, for Men and Women. GM Le Quang Liem and his gangs, GM Megaranto Susanto seeded #4 are going to celebrate this. In Women area, WGM Irene K. Sukandar is leading ,to the other 14 girls. There is also Singapore Open, arbiter seminar, team match Singapore vs Malaysia. All after the Christmas to begin!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, a wrap up 2010 Chess Hall of Fame is ready to review here.

Chess at Asian Games 2010 - Team Match

In a more prestigious chess event in Asian Games, the Team Match started yesterday. 17 teams looking for a gold to please their nation. Asian Games is dominated by China who is excel in multi sports, weaker countries can only rely on 'speciality' sports to stealth the medal, like chess. Getting medal for those weaker countries is like an automatic national success... so much to promote that this match event is a win or die battlefield.

In paradox to above 'preface' I just found that Indonesia is not participating in the team match, look like we only sent GM Megaranto Susanto and WGM Irene K. Sukandar for the Individual Rapid. And to much surprise I also just realise that Singapore is not take part of any chess section as well! Seeing how actively Singapore Federation cultivating their young chess player I strongly question why they are not present in Guangzhou.

Semifinalist play off and MEDALs Standing:

1. China - Gold
2. Phillipine - Silver
3. India - Bronze
4. Iran

1. China - Gold
2. Uzbekistan - Silver
3. Vietnam - Bronze
4. India

GM Megaranto Susanto won the last round against Mongolia's  GM Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan (2460). WGM Irine K. Sukandar also finished her journey with a win against Lithuanian WGM Daulyte Deimante (2307) , but the same misfortune happened to the rest of boards to let Lithuania won 2.5-1.5. With this result Indonesia narrowly missed the category prizes in Group C. In this final round Chelsie Monica was rested though she got higher rating than the rest of the team. From the chess result excel file, WGM Irine K. Sukandar will most likely get her IM title, congratulation!

Pairing for final round is Indonesia vs Mongolia and Indonesia vs Lithuania. The women team already positioned quite high with 12 points but the men team must put their best for this final round, to achieve better rating.

Ukraina memantapkan posisi nomor satunya sehabis mengalahkan Prancis 3-1.

Spanyol juga punya moment indah di ronde sepuluh dengan Alexey Shirov mengalahkan Georgian Jobava Baadur, sedangkan Armenia menang tipis melawan Ceko melalui partai Aronian vs Navara. Saingan buyutan Azerbaijan cuma draw melawan Italia. Ranking medali setelah ronde sepuluh adalah :

Which is the only happy news from this round. Indonesia lost both teams in this round to Mexico and Uzbekistan. In men result, Megaranto vs Leon Hoyos games stop at move 40 in what I see still a complex situation. Maybe some time crisis or whatever resulting in Black defeat. The result of round 8 :

Olympiad 2010 R2 - Tirta Purnama Beats Smirin

Medina draw melawan Nisha Mohote.

Match 4. Israel Indonesia - Round 2

Sutovsky, Emil vs Megaranto, Susanto  1/2-1/2
Smirin, Ilia vs Purnama, Tirta Chandra 0-1
Rodshtein, Maxim vs Novita, Anjas 1-0
Mikhalevski, Victor vs Irwanto, Sadikin 1/2-1/2

Match 7. Indonesia India

Sukandar, Irine Kharisma - Harika, Dronavalli 0-1
Dewi, AA Citra - Tania, Sachdev 0-1
Sihite, Chelsie Monica - Karavade, Eesha 0-1
Medina, Warda Aulia - Mohota, Nisha 1/2-1/2

Sementara itu berita trivia lainnya adalah:
Babak 1 pecatur berating 1700 Jason menang checkmate melawan GM Emre Can.

Indonesia to Chess Olympiad 2010

Indonesia team menuju Chess Olympiad 2010 di Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. Inilah ajang paling seru di mana tiap negara punya sedikit harapan untuk meraih medali. Indonesia team pun demikian.

Indonesia -
GM Susanto Megaranto
FM Anjas Novitas
IM Tirta Chandra Purnama
IM Saidikin Irwanto
IM Taufik Halay

Indonesia Woman -
WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar
Baiq Vina Lestari
WFM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra
WFM Chelsie Monica Shite
WFM Medina Warda Aulia

Singapore - GM Zhang Zhong, IM Fernandez Daniel Howard, FM Chan Wei Xuan Timothy and FM Chua Zheng Yuan Terry. Captain is IM Chan Peng Kong.
Singapore - WFM Jeslin Tay Li Jin, WFM Liu Yang, Christabel Neo Xiuwen, WFM Danielle Ho En Huei and Melissa Lo Yin Ling. Captain is Philip Fernandez.

Philippines - GM Wesley So, GM Eugenio Torre, GM John Paul Gomez, GM Darwin Laylo and IM Richard Bitoon.
Philippines - Catherine Perena, Cheradee Camacho, Shercila Cua, Jedara Docena and Rulp Ylem Jose

Vietnam - Le Quang Liem, Dao Thien Hai, Nguyen Anh Dung, Nguyen Duc Hoa and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son
Vietnam - Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Hoang Thi Nhu, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Pham Le Thao Nguyen

Malaysia - IM Mas Hafizulhelmi, IM Mok Tze Meng, FM Peter Long, Tan Khai Boon and Gregory Lau
Malaysia - Alia Anin Azwa Bakri, WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham, Nurul Huda Wahiuddin, Fong Mi Yen and Roslina Marmono

All the best for Indonesia team dan jangan lupa photo-photonya di facebook (buat Indonesian team woman)

First Campomanes Memorial

Fargere won Dutch Open 2010 with Sicilian Game

This week of Surreal Sicilian games are featured by recent Dutch Open champion, GM Francois Fargere. Little known for this GM but he is a clear 1 point (7.5/9) above eight others player, including GM Erwin L'Ami. See TWIC report here

Two Sicilian games won by Black side, and a very nice one. First is a game IM Mekhitarian, Krikor Sevag.  vs GM F. Fargere, black played a poisonous Najdorf variation. For most of middlegame the Black Queen manuevered through the board. Although Black's Queen side pieces are not even moves, Black managed to advantage himself up to three pawns.

IM Mekhitarian - GM Fargere
Second is a inspiring Black Sicilian with ...h7-h5 featured. For this Black benefit most with White king stucked in the h-corner.

IM Pruijssers, Roeland - GM Fargere:
