Asia Zone 3.3 R.9 Derby Banned

By victory over IM Anh Duong The, GM Darwin Laylo secured his ticket to 2009 Chess World Cup. The last remaining ticket now on theory still available for at least three players. Refer to last round pairing :

GM Laylo Darwin 7 vs GM Zhang Zhong 5½
GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son 5½ vs GM So Wesley 6
IM Mas Hafizulhelmi 5 vs IM Nguyen Thanh Son 5½

Wesley So now has the highest possibility to become the third Pinoys to go WC (Laylo, and Antonio Rogelio Jr). But his opponent Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also has the chances only if he can get a full point. Zhang Zhong will need a victory to at least on pair to So, but no doubt he will face fierce game by Darwin Laylo. The last is IM Nguyen Thanh Son who 'only' face IM Mas Hafizulhelmi from Malaysia. This is happen because on the last two round there is a regulation to avoid player from same country with 50% score to face each other. So this is a manual pairing.

Indonesian only participant GM Megaranto Susanto is giving up hope after in round 8 draw to MF Ton That Nhu Tunh (VIE 2227) in, again, a Trompovksy attack game.

While on women, WGM Irene K. Sukandar also finished his hope to grab the ticket after a lost to GMW Le Thanh Tu (2310). Irene came to her unfamiliar Semi Slav game where her opponent play a g4 sacrifice :

On top of the women section is now WGM Munguntuul Batkhuyag with 6 1/2 point. Final round pairing , again done manually, so no derby on round 9 :

see chess result website for MEN and Women.

For Judith seems like she is still in warm ups mode and she ended up in the middle position. Late comer Ian Nepomniachi doing well and ended at no.2. However on round 13 Ian get shredded by Boris Avrukh, a good collection to my "1.d4 opening" label .

2. Ian Nepomniachi Russia 2632 - 8.5
3. Alexander Beliavsky Slovenia 2662 - 7.0

Berikut mari kita ikuti partainya :

Dwi Tarung Kasparov Karpov 2009

For those who stays outside the Earth here the news about the Kasparov vs Karpov in September 2009. At below is the old Indonesian chess article reporting on Kasparov - Karpov 1990 match. The game taken from round 3 where Kasparov sac a Queen for a Rook and a Knight. The game ended draw. Note that Indonesian version of Algebric notation where ; K=Knight G=Bishop B=Rook M=Queen R=King.

The game can be found at chessgames here, Karpov - Kasparov 1990 , 1/2-1/2 .

Selamat menikmati.

Young and Dangerous IM Ray Robson

IM Ray Robson is the next Young and Dangerous of chess coming from the land of America. He is now right on top of the "next to be a GM" list( UPTD: IM Alex Lenderman is the next US GM). Robert Hess was already "graduated" this month as he is now a GM according to July edition of Fide rating list. Ray ,born in Guam 1994, is a pupil of the famous GM Alex Onischuk. On Chess magazine Onischuk addressed Ray as the future of US chess linking to Ray performance on this year Aeroflot. Thanks to USCF website, Susan Polgar and Jennifer Shahade, now we are familiar with the report on Ray beating a higher rated player. Today he will be the first feature player of my new blog label, the Young and Dangerous* of Chess. This label will try to report on what happening in our era of junior player. (* Young and Dangerous is inspired by a Hong Kong gangsta movie. See wikipedia )

Happening this week is a World Open in Philadelphia. This is the event where Kamsky, Bareev and Smirin will be playing. Joining this event, one of Ray opponent is GM Josh Friedel in round 3. Ray outplayed his opponent with a dare Bishop sacrifice in classic Sicilian Dragon game with black. White has some considerable way to neutralised the attack but he just missed some crucial moves. This game also fit into the Surreal Sicilian label because its won by Black in Sicilian defence.
