British Championship

Live game

Indonesian administration system is arrange by provinces and it is in Pontianak, capital of West Kalimantan (Kalimantan Barat) that this event happening this week. Biel it Young

The fact that Carlsen (age 20) as World #1 and Anand (age 40) as World Champion prove the chess can cross the age without much problem. With this, the Biel 43rd edition which included a Young Grandmaster tournament should be taken quite seriously. At least the Youngster composition is promising for some exciting young rivalry, between players and fans. Top seed is a legitimate reign Junior Champion Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and the rest are the predicted 2020 players to storm the chess scenes. Here the list:

Highlight from official website and  2010 Chess Champion database:

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
Reign Junior Champion 2009 and also should be the most logical winner overhere. As a French staying exactly in the center of Europe, he has been in elite tournament for a solid of time.

Evgeny Tomashevsky
European Champion 2009 and age 23. Very strong but somehow, as many Russians, he is sort of publication.

Fabiano Caruana
2010 Ruy Lopez Rapid Winner, a teenage Italian that already 'secured ' in publication. He performed well in many 2010 team events (the thing that most European GMs doing as daily job).

Wesley So
GM in chess and popularity. After win the 2009 Corus C, this year his Europe campaign still lack of luck. Performed quite fenomenal in World Cup 2009 but his Corus 2010 is in not a very well story. (Updated round 1, beating Howell with his pet Caro Kann game).

Anish Giri
2010 Corus B and Sigeman Chess Winner. Had been helping Anand (if that help) and demolising many GMs, mostly in cutting edge tactical battle.

Dmitry Andreikin
Junior Russian Champion 2009 and 2010, the same with Tomashevky, we like to 'mixed up' with other (Russian) player.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son
The other Vietnam GM than need to follow (if he survive this tournament)

David Howell
2010 Hasting Winner and reign British Champion. Somehow his charm as Junior is running out as he is not yet proven his teeth outside Isle of Britain (if the term exist).

Parimarjan Negi
Historically, one of the youngest GM.

Maxim Rodhstein
And a total stranger to me, wish him a good tournament.  (Updated, and he beated Negi in round 1)

A good moment for ASEAN as Wesley So and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son are playing. The Vietname Le Quang Liem is busy at the elite Dortmund, quite a waste as if he join here I guess the rivalry between Le and So should be 'official'. No Chinese player invited , but actually we also not sure which Chinese to be invited, Li Chao, Yu Yangyi or Zhou brothers. Other hot names like Ray Robson is busy in his US Closed Juniors. Then of course the fun will be spoil if this Young Tournament included the elites, Carlsen, Karjakin, Nepomniachtch. So the line up quite represent July 2010 Junior list, with Jon Ludvig Hammer missing in top ten, after those mentioned name above. Hammer is playing in Najdorf Memorial. Other junior names like Richard Rapport (b1996), Illya Nyzhnyk (b1996) and Jorge Cori (b1995) may need to wait several years to join in.

Biel to be start today, along with the Master and Main tournament. Official website.

Alexander Alekhine in Jakarta 1933

This is another old article about "Berdirinya Percasi" or Arise of Indonesian Chess Union. The article give a photo of Alexander Alekhine playing simul in Jakarta 1933. Translation to the article :

Arise of Indonesian Chess Union
In late 19th century, a number of matchs played in Central Java turn out to be a factors to the arise of Nederlandsch Indische Schaakband (NISB) in Yogyakarta (Jogja) 1915. NISB doing great and success in inviting World Champion 1927-1935 Alexander Alekhine to do simultan in several cities in Java and Sumatera. Alekhine played in 469 games with 95% wins. NISB also invited Dr. Max Euwe, World Champion 1935-1937 doing the same thing.

After Japan arrive, NISB dismissed in 1942. But the chess itself never end. From duel meet between Percam (Mataram Yogyakarta Chess Union) and Percaso (Solo Chess Union) in Solo 1948, the idea to form Percasi (Indonesian Chess Union) begin.

Two years later, Percasi declared and dr.Suwito Mangkusuwondo, who also head of Percam, be the first president. In 1960 Percasi join FIDE, not long after join in Chess Olympiad at Liepzig, the players are Max Arie Wotulo, Arovah Bachtiar, Abubakar Baswedan and Tan Hoan Liang as substitute.

Tips Catur Korchnoi

2. Jangan lupa "mengaca"
Anda mungkin mudah mengidentifikasi kelemahan lawan, tapi diri anda sendiri?

This is a 1995 chess clipping from Bola Magazine. The article is about a tip on "Be A Better Chess Player" (believe) to be writen by Viktor Korchnoi. The translation in english :

1. Play the human, not the chessboard.
Only machine play the opponent in the same way (well maybe not with Rybka, me). When playing unknown opponent use this guideline: If he/she is old generally weak in stamina. Likely to be in time trouble, not familiar with latest chess opening and weak on complicated tactic. Vice versa (old chess player) good in simple position and end game. (well, giving a tips to defeat himself?)

2. Don't forget to 'see a mirror' (do self evaluation)
You can easily identify opponent's weakness but how about yourself? Ask your friend to begin with. Best method is to study your own games. If you lost because of minor blunder do not underestimate and say 'I am on better position but alas lost because of small mistake.....' This will not improved your game. Don't covered it!

3. Do not want to win beautiful
When facing lower rated opponent, say 75% you can beat him, try to think it become 90-95%. Play in simple way. Don't waste time finding his (particular) style weakness. The whole of his playing is actually his biggest weakness.

4. Make yourself lucky
In opposite, when playing strong opponent, target a draw or stealth a victory. 10-20% chance should be thinked higher. How? Make unclear complicated position, where you must use maximum idea and hope your opponent the first do mistake. When happened maximalize this situation.

5. Do not sleep less than four hours
Chess is not only about technique and mental. No chess player can do optimum after a day of preparation hard work and sleep only four hours. Don't do opening preparation two hour before the game. This decrease your confident. Use the time to relax and resting. Thus you will in fresh mind to begin the game.

World Cup 2010, World Open and Women Jermuk GP

It is a Holland vs Germany / Spain in latest World Cup 2010 situation. Germany give the shoot after playing Argentina 4-0. Spain still struggling to defeat Paraguay 1-0 in last phase of the quarterfinal game. So what to predict? The top scores are Wesley Sneijder and David Villa with 5 goals and Miroslav Klose with 4 goals, so much for competition here.

The other 'World' is the World Open in Philadelphia. Viktor Laznicka put it strong win overthere, ahead the like of van Wely, Vallejo Pons, Kamsky etc. Top player quoted (van Wely?) that playing in US is more about tactic and less about opening. Here I picked the miniature game and see how entertaining the US chess battling style. E Perelshteyn vs A. Onischuk in Dutch Defence :

On the other 'W' is the Women 4th GP in Jermuk. Georgian Nana Dzagnidze rulez all the girls with 9/11 ahead Tatiana Konsintseva 7.5/11. The women tournament are always brutal in term of slaying opponent pieces. In the future it will be a quote sayinng like this "decisive games is for girls!" to respond the statistic reported by chessbase here :

As is normal in women's tournaments the numer of drawn games is low – extraordinarily low in this case. Of the 66 games played:

37% (24 games) ended in draws
White won 26 games = 39%
Black won 24 games = 24%
