The recent match of heavyweight chess between Var Akobian and Yuri Shulman just over. Var Akobian won the rapid match with 3.5 to 2.5 of six games and blitz match 6.0 to 2.0 of eight games.

We have five wins for rapid match all games started with 1.d4. The opening choices as as follow :

R 4 : Shulman-Akobian 0-1 D12 Slav 3.Nf3
R 5 : Akobian-Shulman 1-0 D43 Semi-Slav

R 7 : Shulman-Akobian 0-1 D34 Tarrasch Defence, Main Line
R 8 : Akobian-Shulman 1-0 A80 Dutch
White 4 - Black 4

Very well, the myth that 1.d4 is dulled and positional are a topic of myth-buster now :) . As it can be seen this move lead to a decisive result for five rapid games and all blitz games.

Here the blitz game from round 5 where Akobian played unnusual reply to 1.d4, a popular trick to do in blitz game to surprise your opponent.

Varuzhan Akobian vs Yury Shulman Heavyweight Chess Match

Bahasa Indonesia ada di bawah.

America is also a land where chess being played. It was an arena where Paul Morphy, Harry Pillsbury and Frank Marshall unleashed their martial art in pre law era. It was the opposition block against USSR chess dominated world captained by Bobby Fischer, Larry Evans, Pal Benko & Walter Browne in James Bond times. The land where Alexander Shabalov, Alexander Yermolinsky, Aleksander Wojtkiewicz, Anjelina Belakovskaia and many other Alex'es flee from USSR to seeks new hope, along with them, in this post Cold War era are giants like Yasser Seirawan and Gata Kamsky. In this modern age (or internet age) top names like Susan Polgar, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Alexander Onischuk still continue to become part of American chess. And finally we have latest wave of players made up by rojak* generation like Hikaru Nakamura (Japanese descendent), Fabiano Caruana (Italian, and play for Italy now), Irina Krush (Ukraine blood) and two chess names Varuzhan Akobian, who have something related to Mongolia, and Yury Shulman of Belarus bloodline.

(rojak = indonesian salad made up by many many fruits and ingredients..)

Still with this rich chess activities, hard to believe that this continent looks ignored by top chess celebrity like Anand, Kramnik, Topalov and friends. They can travel to anywhere in Europe even to some remotest city where Chessbase usually needs to put a google map into their preview (Nalchik what? Elista where? :) ). I think issue like lack of reputation, money and international lobbying are reason for this. I can't remember reputable chess event happen in USA similar to Wijk aan Zee, or Linares. So good news is mean plenty room to improve from Americans!

Back to story, this week the two Americans, Var Akobian and Yuri Shulman are going to do a duel for four days in eight rapid matches. The first impression when I saw the poster is this looks like a heavyweight boxing events where the two boxers posed for their bout.So far results in my hand are 2.5 vs 1.5 in Akobian favor. So here today preview, the California no.1 vs US Champion.

Enjoyyyy...

GM Antoaneta Stefanova Simuls in Singapore

In http://www.intchessasia.com/site/index.htm GM Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria will be doing simuls in Singapore at 23rd April. Unlucky for me it is on Thurdays and is a working day for me. Singapore chess buzz is really good this day with 3-4 one day tournament being held this year. In fact there will be two one day chess events going on this month.

The only complain is there is little information on chess report in Singapore. So let's hope there will be more story on Stefanova's visit.

Surreal Sicilian in Serbia

Another new chess blog from me is SURREAL SICILIAN. Like my Shredder Chess Move, this is going to be a fun chess games played in sicilian defence AND win by Black in less than 30 moves. So this is pretty much an overview about sicilian opening that favour black. I am doing this because I am playing sicilian in black for almost 10 years and seeing black crushing white with sicilian is a great pleasure. I will put simple commentary (can't called it annotation ...) on what I can think about it.

Serbia Individual Championship started from 2nd to 15th April 2009, the last round is 10th, and here a miniature game that fall to my new article. Here the first edition of Surreal Sicilian, a win by GM Boban Bogosavljevic (2526) over Serbian junior champion Ivan Sarenac (2320). The diagram will be flipped and we will enjoy this game in black point of view.

The bahasa indonesian commentary in blue.

in Lahno (2439) vs. Andreev (2490), Kramatorsk 2003 black immediately play 10...dxe5 ,which black lost in 28 moves.

11. exd6 f6 while attacking black is also open up a square for future king evacuation, if needed.

sambil menyerang hitam membuka petak buat pelarian rajanya, kalo diperlukan.

12. dxe7? Bxe7 13. O-O-O
white is one pawn ahead but a hanging bishop on g5. the long castling with rook immediately come to attacking looks over optimistic. The problem should be a queen standing on a5 waiting for white's knight to be eliminated and launch a sneak attack.

..Be6 14. Bb5+ Kf7 15. Bd7 Bxd7 16. Qxd7 Rxc3!

sacrifice a rook for an important knight. now suddenly black has serious counter attack.

17. bxc3 Qxc3 18. Rhe1 Ne3 19. Rxe3 Qxe3+ 0-1

black resign because losing a piece and ..Rd8 ready to force an exchange that favour black.

Shredding Chess Move - Russian Team Championship 2009

In metalhead dictionary shredding is an orgasmatic way to exploit your guitar by playing 1000 notes per minute. The goal is simple to have an ultimate pleasure in playing guitar, and for listener an ultimate way to headbanging your head. Waiit, what relation here with chess? Well, by using this new term, I would like to introduce my new chess blog article. This game will included in my 1.d4 opening blog label, selected games because of its quick win via 1.d4, I used to called it a Shredding Chess Move! \m/.

Ok, here is my first SCM, a game by Dmitry Andreikin vs Maksim Serov. This is part of the 2009 Russian Team Championship held in Dagomys (please search in wiki yourself for enlightened where on earth it is) and round is nine. Andreikin belong to Economist-SGSEU - 1 team with 2625 rating and Serov is from M.Chigorin CC with 2340 rating.

My amateur commentary of the game also in Indonesian language.

Andreikin,D vs Serov,M - Rus Team Champ 2009 - Dagomy
1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d6 3.c4 Nbd7 4.Nc3 e5 5.Bg5
a strange way to open by black, I am not sure what name of this move order.

..Be7 6.Qc2 O-O 7.e3 c6 8.Bd3 h69.Bh4 a6 10.O-O-O

with black slow in making any serious attack , white quickly setting up an attacking scheme on black king side.

..Qc7 11.g4 b5 12.g5! black seems hopeless to halt the advancing of the g pawn since the white bishop is pinning the black's knight - hitam nggak bisa menahan perkembangan bidak g karna gajah putih yang men-pin kuda hitam ... hxg5 13.Nxg5 bxc4 14.Bxc4 d5 15.Bb3 Qb6

after everything ready for the shredding attack white launched his first forcing move. Can you spot how to continue?

semua siap untuk penyerangan putih, ayo apa langkah berikut nya??

16.Rhg1! Re8 17.Nxf7!! Kxf7

black move from here are less or more forced now.

langkah hitam dari sini sudah langkah terpaksa.
18.Qg6+ Ke6 19.Bxf6 Nxf6 because the rock is under attack also ... 20.dxe5 Kxe5

21.Nxd5! cxd522.Rxd5+ Ke6 23.Rb5+ 1-0
black resign because his queen is parting away from the game and the king is in the middle of enemy's men.
