Gempita Piala Dunia Catur di kota Baku tahun 2015 ini menginjak ke ronde 3. Setelah melalui dua partai catur klasik, ke-32 pecatur yang tersisa akan makin mengkerucut menjadi 16 pemain saja untuk siap adu catur lagi di ronde 4.  Kemarin malam September 19, 2015 sudah dilangsungkan partai catur klassik ke-2 untuk ronde 3, walaupun masih menyisakan beberapa partai remis, namun beberapa pecatur sudah lolos ke babak 4. Piala Dunia Catur / Chess World Cup Baku 2015 ini seperti kita ketahui menggunakan format sistem Knock Out / Sistem Gugur.  Dua unggulan atas Fabiano Caruana dan Anish Giri lolos ke round 4 dengan mudah. Disusul Ding Liren dan Wei Yi. Kedua pecatur China ini akan bertemu dan duel di babak ke-empat. Juga ada pecatur Ukraina Pavel Eljanov yang tampil sempurna dengan angka 6-0 atas tiga lawan-lawannya. Sensasi Pavel Eljanov terakhir adalah menyingkirkan Alexander Grischuk 2-0. Bisakah Eljanov menembus 7-0 , rekor The Magnificent Seven nya Fabiano Caruana yang dicetak di turnamen Sinquefield tahun 2014 lalu? Selain itu pecatur tuan rumaah Shakhriyar Mamedyarov , dua pecatur Rusia Jakovenko, Karjakin dan satu pecatur Polandia turut memastikan pairing di ronde 4.

Di papan lainnya, sebanyak tujuh pairing harus menempuh babak tie break tambahan nanti malam. Mereka termasuk Vladimir Kramnik yang dipersulit lawan senegara mudanya Dmitry Andreikin. Lalu Veselin Topalov yang juga disusahkan lawan dari China, Lu Shanglei. Si koko Lu ini dikenal sebagai pemain blitz yang handal, jadi partainya dengan Topalov nanti malam akan seru.

Hikaru Nakamura vs Ian Nepo... juga seru karna dua-duanya pemain blitz kelas papan atas. Partai ex Filipin Wesley So dan pemain Vietnam Le Quang Liem juga ikutan nge-blitz nanti malam. Keduanya adalah murid ibu Susan Polgar , tapi Wesley So sekarang sudah keluar dari bimbingan sang ibu. Hal ini menambah sengitnya duel kedua pecatur kelahiran ASEAN ini.

Lainnya adalah Michael "Spider" Adams melawan DPL (Dominguez Peres Leinier, bukan Dewi Persik Lau...) juga seru. Teimour Radjabov dan Peter Svidler paling akhir.

Di babak tiga, partai yang cukup fantastis adalah kemenangan Wei Yi atas pecatur Ukraina Alexander Areschenko. Si jagoan kungfu boy Wei Yi yang terkenal dengan partai abadinya melawan Lazaro Bruzon beberapa bulan lalu kembali ditantang dengan pembelaan Sisilia oleh Areschenko. Tampaknya Wei Yi adalah spesialis permainan tajam penuh komplikasi di mana Areschenko malah memilih variasi Bidak Beracun, atau Poisoned Pawn melawan Wei Yi. Setelah Wei Yi melepas jurus simpanan langkah 16. Rbd1 / benteng b ke d1, Areschenko gagal mencari langkah pembelaan yang lebih dingin , tapi memilih adu panas dengan memakan umpan kuda Wei Yi. Chess World Cup Baku 2015 - Round 3 Pairings Commentary

The 2015 Chess World Cup reaching its 3rd round in Baku. The first round saw 128 chess players starting the game since September 9, 2015. Then the number quickly reduced to half and then to about 32 players only as per round 3. The most upset in round 3 is the quit of Levon Aronian. He is unable to score any victory point over strong Russian Alexander Areschenko, and then suffered defeat in the last rapid game in tie break round. Alexander Areschenko indeed having his revenge, for 10 years ago, it was Levon Aronian who knock him out in the 2005 edition of World Cup. Going with this result, Aronian will most certain out of the next Candidate match. The only hope is when Armenia hosting Candidate match and Aronian join as wild card holder.

Perjuangan pecatur unggulan asal Armenia, Levon Aronian akhirnya berakhir. Dia dikandaskan pecatur Russia Alexander Areschenko di babak ke-2, ronde tie-break catur cepat. Dengan kegagalan Aronian di World Cup 2015 Baku ini, satu-satunya harapan agar dia bisa tampil di turnamen kandidat adalah dengan menjadi wild-card / pecatur terpilih oleh panitia.

The other notable match is between Hou Yifan vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who won by the Azeri player. Hou Yifan must be given credit for being able to force two draws in classical games, then only lost the first rapid game against Shakh. The other Chinese player in hot spot is Wei Yi, who match with Yuri Vovk is extremely pleased the fans. The first 10 minutes blitz see both playing aggressive game that make live chat explode. Wei Yi then strike back with the black game. The two went into five minutes blitz games. Eventually the younger Wei Yi won the match to move on round 3.

Duel antara dua bintang catur terkini , yaitu antara pecatur China  Wei Yi dengan pecatur Ukraina, Yuri Vovk adalah salah satu partai terpanas di babak 2. Mereka sama kuat di catur klasik, Wei Yi pertama mengalahkan Yuri tapi di hari ke-2 , Yuri balas kalahkan Wei Yi. Mereka pun masuk ke babak tie-break di mana keduanya seri di partai catur cepat 20 menit. Di partai catur cepat 10 menit seperti terlihat di atas, Yuri memegang buah hitam dan mengalahkan Wei Yi dalam partai yang sangat ganas. Kemudian Wei Yi berhasil kembali mengejar ketinggalan, dan duel keduanya pun musti ditentukan dengan partai catur kilat 5 menitan. Akhirnya Wei Yi yang lebih muda yang menang di duel ini. Wei Yi akan berhadapan dengan pecatur Ukraina lagi, yaitu Alexander Areschenko di round 3.

Di ronde 2, satu-satunya duel yang harus diselesaikan dengan adu pinalti catur , atau sesi Armageddon adalah partai Michael Adams vs Viktor Laznicka. Di catur Armageddon, putih dapat lima menit sedangkan hitam hanya empat menit. Namun putih wajib menang, kalau remis maka hitam dinyatakan menang. Di sesi Armagedon ini pecatur Inggris Mickey Adams meladeni pembelaan Skandinavia nya pecatur Ceko Viktor Laznicka dengan benar. Sungguh agak aneh memang melihat strategi hitam yang hanya membutuhkan remis namun bermain dengan pembelaan tajam seperti ini. The hottest pairing in round 3. The pairing has many historic facts. They are both South East Asian-ers, and fight each other oftenly in junior years. Although only six games found in chessgames.com, it is must be more than that. The two are trained under Webster University, where Le Quang Liem still in the team while Wesley So is the "alumni" by now. Le Quang Liem came to US first, and at one point rated much higher than Wesley So. Then it seems Le Quang Liem frog leaped by Wesley in recent years in term of elo rating. Both will have something to prove and the two country's supporter will once again face to face.

The Land of Fallen Champions

Of all the excitement in K.O. event such as Chess World Cup, we like to see who survive and who doesn't. This year World Cup in Baku is quite extravaganza in term of "fallen heroes". The upsets are in the most fantastic. Three ex chess World Cup Champion are just eliminated in round 1. The first is GM Gata Kamsky from USA. Though his loses is quite "acceptable",  his opponent GM Hrant Melkumyan is indeed very strong Armenian grandmaster and active player. While Gata himself admit lack of update in chess theory. Gata is chess World Cup champion in 2007.

The second and third ex-champion to knocked out are Rustam Kasimdzhanov, 2004 FIDE World Champion and Boris Gelfand , 2009 World Cup holder. Kasimdzhanov failed to young talent from Canada, Anton "I have booked my flight tomorrow" Kovalyov. Boris Gelfand tragedy is even more spectacular, slayed by Chilean Christobal Henriquez Villagra, who born in 1996. Chess fans begin to research is Boris Gelfand quit the highest upset in entire World Cup history. Their elo rating gap is 2741 versus 2511. In the fans live chat some one commented that Christobal himself rarely played against 2600.

Peter Leko - Wen Yang
Who is Wen Yang? A quick look in the  Wiki showed that he is "way too old" to the Chinese golden age standard, as he is now at 27. His advance to 2nd round is due to his win over Igor Kavalenko, quite a feat to consider. Peter Leko is solid as Clash of Clan fortress, so prepare for lengthy fight in this board.

Le Quang Liem vs Nikita Vitiugov
Le Quang Liem passed through the 2nd round by defeating his room-mate, Azeri Vasif Durarbayli. Which has a nice background story , according to coach Paul Truong Facebook post:

GM Vasif Durarbayli (Azerbaijan) lost a tough game against his Webster University roommate GM Liem Le. They both prepared surprises for each other and gave everything they had. In the mean time, GM Ray Robson fought valiantly to try to even up the match. Unfortunately, he did not succeed. The Lufthansa strike which caused the massive delays played a major role in his poor 1st game performance. In spite of the disappointment, we all dined together.

 After dinner, Vasif offered to show all of us downtown Baku at night. Liem could not go because he had to complete a school assignment. But we took him up on his offer. After a few hours of a walking tour, we found out that Liem's luggage finally arrived at the airport. But he had to go there to pick it up himself. Who agreed to help Liem with this process? No other than his roommate Vasif who he just beat!

 It could not make us any prouder. They followed Susan's motto: "Win with grace, lose with dignity!" and at SPICE, we are one family!

Le Quang Liem will met strong Russian, Nikita Vitiugov, but maybe Durarbayli will become strong background support for Le.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave vs Gabriel Sargissian
Gabriel Sargissian barely left the round 1 with only few hours to sleep due to exhausting Armageddon session with his beloved Mateusz Bartel. On the other hand, Maxime VL also not waiting comfortably having finished round 1 with just 2 games. He is spending too much time watching the other sport, tennis. Also a strong pairing to watch.

The story is Caruana once offered to be Azerbaijan team. If that so, Rauf Mamedov will become his team mate. Unfortunately, here they are rival in round 2. Caruana will guarantee stronger opposition from one of Azeri top player.

Cristobal Henriquez Villagra vs Julio Granda
Cristobal Henriquez is the young David to defeat Goliat, Boris Gelfand. He will once again challenge by old lion, Julio Granda Zuniga. As fellow Latin American, I am sure Julio knew something better about Cristobal than Boris Gelfand. In last World Cup Julio Granda create sensation by advancing to 4th round, defeating Anish Giri in the way. Julio is famously known for his "lack of chess opening knowledge" power, something that can confused opponent who relied to much on opening.

Anton Kovalyov - Sandro Mareco 
A little too pesimism, Anton booked a return ticket to Canada too early, thinking that he may not able to defeat Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Anton Kovalyov advancing to round 2 meaning he got more extra money, so he will need to worry less about his booked airplane today. He will face Sandro Mareco who upset Ni Hua in round 1. Interesting pairing that see both underdog, and one of them to advance round 3.

Vladislav Artemiev vs Radosław Wojtaszek
A battle of two strong 2600 grandmaster. Radoslaw is Anand's assistant, and Artemiev is strong Russian grandmaster. Strong pairing to watch.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov - Hou Yifan 
Actually this is Hou Yifan fourth World Cup, and she is making progress by going to 2nd round this year. She will be challenge by Mamedyarov, who she played several times in classical and blitz games.

Chess World Cup Baku 2015 - Ronde 1.1 Aronian Nakamura Menang

Salah satu pagelaran percaturan penting tahun ini adalah Chess World Cup di kota Baku, negara Azerbaijan. Chess World Cup alias Piala Dunia Catur ini seperti biasa digelar dengan sistem Knock Out, sebanyak 128 pecatur tersaring melalui berbagai qualifier bertarung menghasilkan 64 pairing di babak pertama. Jagoan-jagoan teratas di turnamen ini adalah Veselin Topalov, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Vladimir Kramnik, sampai ke Wesley So, Vasily Ivanchuk, Peter Svidler, dan nun jauh di bawah masih adalah Hou Yifan. Seperti terlihat, pecatur-pecatur unggulan bisa dengan mudah mengalahkan pairing babak pertamanya yang memang dipasangkan dengan pecatur dengan urutan terbontot. Veselin Topalov dengan santai menyudahi permainan pecatur International Master dari Nigeria Adu Oladapo dalam 49 langkah:

Sementara itu pecatur asal Phillipines yang pindah ke USA, Wesley So sempat membuat para fans nya spot jantung, karena hingga langkah-langkah terakhir Wesley belum menunjukkan keunggulan berarti melawan saingannya dari Iran, Parham Maghsoodloo. Namun krisis waktu dan juga mungkin tekanan mental, si Parham tidak melihat bahwa ada langkah Wesley So yang sebenarnya bisa ditangkis untuk mencapai hasil remis.

Beberapa kejutan dari pecatur underdog yang bisa menahan remis pecatur yang lebih kuat adalah :

Anish Giri 1/2-1/2 IM Arthur Seggwangyi, di mana si Anish walaupun bisa mendominasi permainan namun hanya bisa unggul 1 pion dan tidak cukup untuk memenangkan partai caturnya. Partai ini berjalan paling lama dan banyak yang mencemoh si Anish yang seharusnya menerima draw lebih awal.

Partai yang dipuji-puji keseruan nya adalah antara pecatur USA Ray Robson vs  Yuri Vovk , di mana langkah 26...Qg5!! memang indah.

Ray Robson adalah salah satu dari 9 pecatur USA yang tampil di World Cup Baku ini. Nampak Amerika Serikat makin berhasil dalam hal penggemukan pecatur top mereka. Hanya saja Gata Kamsky kalah melawan pecatur Armenis Hrant Melkumyan. Namun pecatur berbakat Sam Sevian dengan dingin menahan remis pecatur tuan rumah Teimor Radjabov walaupun dengan kondisi kurang 1 bidak. Sam Sevian adalah pecatur muda yang juga penulis kolom endgame di majalah Catur Amerika, tak heran penguasaanya di endgame ini terlihat dewasa dan matang.

dan terakhir, salah satu langkah termanis dibuat oleh Vladimir Kramnik melawan pecatur manis dari Peru, Deysi Cori :

Vladimir Kramnik 31...Qd5! , mengancam back rank mate oleh benteng, namun kalau putih mengelak , gajah nya akan lepas.

Si manis lainnya, Hou Yifan menahan remis pecatur Rafael Leitao dan dianggap sebagai keberhasilan di babak pertama ini walaupun si Rafael sebenarnya punya rating lebih rendah dari Hou Yifan.

Levon Aronian Menang / Wins Sinquefield Cup 2015

Setelah melewati sembilan babak, Levon Aronian akhirnya keluar sebagai pemenang turnamen catur super piala Sinquefield Cup 2015. Turnamen catur paling ngetop top dunia ini digelar di Amerika Serikat tepatnya di kota Saint Louis. Turnamen ini adalah bagian dari seri catur Grand Chess Tour yang sebelumnya sudah dilangsungkan di kota Stavanger (Norwegia, dimenangkan Veselin Topalov) dan kemudian akan dilanjutkan di kota London sekitar akhir tahun 2015 nanti.

Babak sembilan hanya melihat satu partai yang berakhir 1-0 yaitu partai Nakamura vs Alexander Grischuk. Hikaru Nakamura menyerang pertahanan Sisilia Grischuk dengan serangan Rossolimo hingga langkah 77. Partai yang cukup liar ini sebenarnya berjalan seimbang, namun Grischuk mulai kehabisan waktu dan di langkah 48 tak bisa menemukan jawaban yang tepat dan selanjutnya mulai tidak akurat hingga akhirnya kalah. Di Saint Louis, pecatur Levon Aronian dari Armenia diyakini balik ke puncak performanya dengan mengumpulkan nilai 6. Juara dunia catur Magnus Carlsen musti puas diposisi ke-tiga dan pecatur Belanda Anish Giri yang duduk di ranking 2. Bersama Maxime Vachier-Lagrave dan Hikaru Nakamura, keempat mereka mengumpulkan nilai 5. Posisi bontot terpaksa diduduki Wesley So yang tampil dengan penampilan kurang mantap, disusul Fabiano Caruana dan Viswanathan Anand.

Hadiah cukup besar pun dibuahkan untuk pecatur-pecatur top 10 dunia ini berdasarkan prestasinya di seri ini. Hari selanjutnya dilanjutkan dengan acara main catur bersama antara semua peserta catur ini ditambah mantan juara dunia Garry Kasparov dan komentator GM Yasser Seirawan. Mereka akan tanding catur beregu dipimpin oleh konglomerat sekaligus patron catur Saint Louis Chess Club, Rex Sinquefield dan lawannya adalah anaknya, Randy Sinquefield.

2 hari setelah babak terakhir ini dilangsungkan upacara penutupan dan kemudian satu hari untuk para pecatur top dunia bersenang-senang di acara ULTIMATE MOVES. Acara ULTIMATE MOVES ini adalah tanding ganti-gantian antara 2 regu. 1 regu dipimpin captain Rex Sinquefield , sang patron club catur St Louis dan 1 regu dipimpin anaknya, Randy Sinquefield. 2 regu ini diisi para pecatur top tadi. Mereka saling bergantian main satu partai catur, setiap grandmaster kebagian 5 langkah, diganti grandmaster lainnya. Hasil akhir dari partai pertama dimenangkan oleh tim Randy, karena si ayah blunder parah diposisi yang sebenarnya sudah menang.

Aronian Kalahkan Wesley So - Sinquefeld Cup 2015 Round 4

Empat round sudah berlangsung di turnamen catur super Sinquefeld Cup 2015 di kota St Louis Amerika Serikat. Ini adalah turnamen ke-2 dari seri Grand Chess Tour, yang sebelumnya digelar di kota Stavanger, Norwegia. Seri Grand Chess Tour mengumpulkan sepuluh pecatur dari hampir seluruh pecatur top ten dunia untuk bertanding di seri-seri tournament ini. Hingga ronde ke-4, pecatur Bulgaria Veselin Topalov masih memimpin klasemen sementara, Topalov adalah pemenang seri sebelumnya di Norway dan terlihat masih cukup banyak "bensin" tersisa untuk bisa menjuarai seri kali ini. Di ronde pertama Topalov mengkandaskan Magnus Carlsen dengan buah hitam, pertanda yang baik! Sekilas info, Jakarta juga dirumorkan akan menjadi tuan rumah seri turnamen ini mulai tahun depan.

Ronde 4 melihat empat partai lainnya diakhiri dengan remis, namun focus perhatian pemirsa ada di papan partai catur Wesley So vs Levon Aronian. Di partai ini, Aronian memainkan Nimzo-Indian yang disambut dengan variasi Kmoch oleh Wesley So. Pecatur asal Armenia, Aronian membuat permainan langsung menarik di langkah ke-7 dengan 7...a6, keluar dari teori populer yang mungkin dikuasai Wesley So. Permainan tambah tajam begitu kuda Aronian nancap di ujung sayap raja. Perkembangan buah Wesley So yang pasif menambah samsara pecatur Philipina pindahan ke US ini, Wesley pun menyerah di langkah 28, setelah melewati beberapa kombinasi cantik termasuk korban kuda dari Aronian. Di interview pasca permainan Aronian ditanya komentator Maurice Ashley :

Di ronde ini Magnus Carlsen ditahan remis oleh Anish Giri. Carlsen memegang buah hitam dan memainkan Sicilian Sveshnikov yang tajam dan teoritis, namun keduanya hanya bisa mencapai hasil remis. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave kebagian sulitnya melawan Hikaru Nakamura. Di partai King Indian Defence ini, Nakamura berhasil mengail di air keruh dan mendapatkan extra dua bidak, namun ini dicapai di babak endgame tipe gajah berlainan warna / opposite color bishop dan keunggulan bidak ini tidak lagi berpengaruh, hasil remis pun diteken kedua pemain. Anand ditahan remis oleh Caruana dan Topalov remis cepat melawan Alexander Grischuk. Asian Continental Chess 2015 - Round 4

Asian Continental Chess 2015 is on action this week hosted in Al Ain City of UAE. All Asian chess players from Zone 3.1 to 3.7 are invited to the party. The 1st winner in Open will received $11,000 and Women's is $6,000. A total of $50,000 + $25,000 prize fund is available in this top Asian chess tournament. Players travel around the Asian to be here also not only aim for the money, but the top five from Open category shall qualify for 2015 World Cup as well one ticket for Woman category.

As per round 4, new Chinese player IM Lin Chen is leading the Open field with 3.5 points, sharing exact point with GM Surya Ganguly, GM Vishnu Prasanna and GM Darini Pouria. The Open section top seed actually GM Le Quang Liem with his 2699 elo point, only seconded by his country mate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son.

In Women, IM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi, Medina Aulia Wardan and Atousa Pourkashiyan are fighting top place with same 3.5 points. The top seed girl is actually WGM Tan Zhongyi.

Berikut partai catur Medina Aulia Warda melawan Gulmira Dauletova di babak 2 yang dimenangkan Medina. Di partai Sicilian Defense ini kedua pemain bermain ketat, partai berjalan cukup posisionil di awal namun setelah petak central terbuka, menjadi taktikal. Namun keluar dari babak tengah, Medina berhasil unggul 1 bidak lepas di lajur d. Melalui akurasi babak akhir yang bagus, Medina membuat Gulmira menyerah karena bidak ini segera akan promosi tanpa bisa dicegah oleh hitam. Di ronde 4, Medina menahan remis salah satu saingan terberatnya dari Iran, WGM Atousa Pourkashiyan. Medina akan berhadapan dengan pecatur kuat IM Padmini Rout dari India di round 5.
