Sean Winshand Raih Perunggu Catur di Italia - Mare di Fano Open 2016

Sean Winshand bersama 13 rekan pecatur diberangkatkan ke turnamen catur Mare di Fano Open di negara Italia. Turnamen yang berarti "Turnamen Terbuka Musim Panas di tepian Laut kota Fano" (Summer International Fano Open by the Sea side) ini dihadirkan di kota Fano propinsi Pesaro, Italia. Menurut Wikipedia, kota ini hanya dihuni 60 ribuan penduduk. Yah, kira-kira sepadat satu kelurahan di Jakarta barangkali......

Turnamen catur ini digelar dari tanggal 30 Juli sampai 6 Agustus 2016 ini mempertandingkan catur klasik sembilan rounds. Sean dkk mengikuti kategori Open A, yang juga diperkuat line upnya dengan pecatur-pecatur bergelar Grandmaster dari daratan Eropa. Seed teratas dihuni GM Alexandr Fier dari Brazil disusul GM Frode Urkedal dari Norwegia. Tampak dari daftar starting up adalah pecatur kesohor GM Oleg Romanishin dari Rumania.

Sean Winshand, pecatur muda Indonesia yang sekarang bergelar International Master, akhirnya menuntaskan turnament ini dengan menduduki peringkat 3. Sean mengumpulkan nilai 6 hasil dari 9 rounds bertanding. Di peringkat teratas, tournament Mare di Fano ini dimenangkan oleh GM Alexandr Fier, secara berturut juara dua juga disabet GM Frode Urkedal. Hasil akhir ini memperlihatkan hanya Sean yang sebenarnya "hanya" seed #11 yang berhasil menyalip ke peringkat 3, melompati beberapa pecatur dengan rating yang lebih tinggi.

Dalam perjalanan juara meraih perunggu ini, Sean dihadapkan pada beberapa pecatur bergelar. Titik terbaik ada di round 4 di mana Sean mengalahkan pecatur Polandia bernama IM Piotr Nguyen. Sean kemudian dikalahkan Alexandr Fier sebelum kemudian draw melawan IM Nicolai Getz dari Norwegia. Pecatur yang hampir seangkatan Sean ini, Nicolai Getz, tampaknya puas berhadapan dengan pecatur Indonesia. Nicolai Getz berturut-turut melawan Aris TLS (menang), FM Masruri Rahman (draw) sebelumnya akhirnya ditundukkan FM Novendra Priasmoro. Di babak enam Nicolai Getz lalu berhadapan dengan Sean Winshand (remis). Hasil lainnya, IM Medina Warda Aulia juga menjadi pecatur puteri yang paling tinggi peringkatnya, atau kerennya menyabet title "best lady".

FM Novendra Priasmoro sendiri walaupun hanya meraih nilai 5.5 dan duduk di peringkat 11, adalah peserta Indonesia yang meraih point FIDE terbanyak, sebanyak 43.8 points! Menurut intipan di medsos, FM Novendra Priasmoro dikabarkan meraih norma IM nya yang kedua. Pecatur Khadijah Qurota'ain juga dilaporkan meraih norma IM yang pertama. Tournament catur Mare di Fano ini diorganisir oleh Fano Chess Club 1988 dan Dario Pedini. Hadiah pertama di Open A sekitar 800 Euro.

GM Alexandr Fier wins the 5th Summer International Festival Fano by the Sea 2016. It is a chess tournament organized in the seaside of eastern Italy region. GM Frode Urkedal in the 2nd place and Indonesian chess IM Sean Winshand in the 3rd place. Indonesian contingent brings up a strong 14 chess players to play in Italy.

The tournament is organized by the Fano Chess Club 1988 and Dario Pedini. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013. Awarded with Bronze Star by CONI. The organizing team has been holding the Italian Rapid Championships for the past six years.

In the middle of the summer, chess aficionados will have an opportunity to enjoy sea, delicious Italian food and serious chess in the company of a number of invited GMs and IMs. The Open section is composed of five parts: A group (> 1900), B group (<2000 1600="" a="" and="" c="" final="" group="" i="" rapid="" tournament.="" u-16="">

Open A and Open B will be held over 9 rounds of Swiss system; 7 rounds for Open C and U16.
Time control: 90′ x 40 + 15′ + 30” from beginning
Top prize in the Open A is 800 EUR. The total prize fund is 8.000 EUR. 

Sean Winshand Wins JAPFA Chess 2015

Just when we have enough chess for this week, starting from Shamkir Gashimov 2015, World Team Chess Championship and World Women's Team Championship, JAPFA Chess Festival finished their 2015 edition today at Jakarta. The event include JAPFA Grandmaster Tournament, which played by 12 titled players, six players ranging from Sergey Tiviakov to Alina L'Ami as "foreigners" , to played six "locals" players. It's a 12 players single round-robin, played at Hotel Kartika Jakarta. The organizer of JAPFA Grandmaster Tournament 2015 aims for new champion to be born from Indonesian players, thus inviting only "new bloods", all International Master and one FIDE Master.

After 11 rounds, the result is overwhelming for the organizer since IM Sean Winshand Cuhendi finally emerged as sole winner of the tournament. Starting the tournament with a win over GM G.N.Gopal in round 1,  Sean Winshand Cuhendi put in a solid performance, undefeated, drawings against top rated player while crushing against his own colleagues and lower rated players. Sean finished with 7.5/11 points, secured a GM norm.

Sean Winshand Cuhendi, born 1997, is the new sheriff in town, he got his IM title just last year. His works mainly did not shown up in the radar of Indonesian chess report because Sean build up his "chess career" a little off the map, playing in Europe (Hungary to be precise) just when he was a teenager. It is reported that Sean was experienced unusual health, born with hydrocephalus condition. His parent then gave Sean chess board so that he can played with no physical risk. Sean later sent to Hungary for training and tournament practicing where he won Budapest Saturday Open. He gained lots of elo point by playing over there. Sean is now the new force for Indonesian chess. Noted that the country haven't got a new chess grandmaster since GM Susanto Megaranto many many years ago.

Second place is GM Nguyen Anh Dung and Sergei Tiviakov claimed third place. It is not sure if Tiviakov able played this tournament with full heart as he is coach for Indonesian players, well, at least to Irine K. Sukandar, whom defeated him in round 4.

Sean Winshand Cuhendi Menangkan Turnamen Grandmaster JAPFA 2015

Turnamen Grandmaster JAPFA tahun 2015 akhirnya dimenangkan oleh International Master Sean Winshand Cuhendi. Di ronde 11, Sean menahan remis rekan Medina Aulia Warda, sedangkan saingan terdekatnya pecatur Vietnam grandmaster Nguyen Anh Dung ditekuk oleh pecatur Farid Firman Syah. Dengan hasil ini Sean berada di puncak klasemen dengan nilai 7.5 dari 11 ronde, Sean tampil sebagai urutan pertama satu-satunya. Nguyen ada di peringkat kedua, sedangkan pak guru pecatur Belanda GM Sergei Tiviakov ada di posisi ketiga.

Sean Winshand yang kiprah percaturannya agak kurang "terpantau" akhirnya mengukuhkan keberadaannya sebagai talenta catur yang sangat perlu diperhatikan. Sean memiliki rating FIDE 2428 pada waktu penulisan artikel ini. Sean memulai turnamen dengan kemenangan melawan grandmaster dari India G.N. Gopal, selanjutnya menahan remis Alina L'Ami, Muhammad Ali Lutfi, Farid Firman Syah, Irine K. Sukandar sebelum mengalahkan Purnama Tirta Chandra yang lagi down di turnamen ini. Sean menahan remis Nguyen Anh Dung di partai yang penuh tanda tanya karena menurut relay notasi catur dari chessbomb, ada TIGA Kali kesempatan skak mat dalam 1 langkah yang tidak dihiraukan Sean, mungkin pembaca bisa memberi keterangan mengenai partai ini.

Dengan menduduki peringkat 1 di turnamen grandmaster catur JAPFA 2015, Sean Winshand Cuhendi meraih norma GM. Diharapkan dengan bekal GM-norm ini Sean bisa terus berjuang menjadi grandmaster (pria) terbaru Indonesia, sesuatu yang cukup jarang ditemui saat ini semenjak kejayaan GM Susanto Megaranto hampir sepuluh tahun silam.

Di partai lain, Irine Kharisma Sukandar mengalahkan gurunya Sergei Tiviakov di partai Scandinavian Defence yang cukup alot dan taktikal.

Medina bermain cukup bagus di dua babak terakhir di mana Medina mengalahkan Irine Sukandar di partai "siapa cewek catur terkuat Indonesia 2015". Namun di peringkat Medina harus puas di bawah Irine dikarenakan poin keseluruhannya yang masih kalah.

The annual Japfa Chess Festival is happening now in Jakarta. The highlight of this chess festival is on the GRANDMASTER Tournament. This year, 12 titled players have been invited, they are top seeded by Sergey Tiviakov, followed by G.N. Gopal and Antonio Rogelio. There are a balance of six foreign players and six locals. The tournament sponsor indicated that the tournament invited non-GM local players only in the hope that these players will get GM -norm.

As for round 1, the highlight is Sean Winshand Cuhendi victory over G.N. Gopal. Sean is International Master and strongest Indonesian player in the field. The game followed a wild Taimanov Sicilian that just being played in Tblisi 2015 between Mamedyarov and Anish Giri. In this wild middle game, black gained promising queen side attack to white long castled king. In the end Gopal made terrible blunder that allowed Sean Winshand to easily crushing the attack on the exposed king.

As for round 2, Vietnam representative GM Nguyen Anh Dung extended his early lead by defeating another Indonesian player, IM Tirta Chandra Purnama. Nguyen defeated Irine Kharisma Sukandar in round 1, so now he is on perfect 2/2 point.

The event being played in Hotel Kartika Jakarta from 14-23rd April 2015. It is a round robin of 11 rounds out of 12 players. With the upcoming rumor of super chess league  where Jakarta is mentioned as one of the host, this Japfa chess tournament will worth international attention.

Turnamen grandmaster di Festival Catur Japfa 2015 telah berlangsung 2 babak hingga hari Kamis ini. Kejutan di babak pertama adalah kemenangan International Master Sean Winshand Cuhendi atas unggulan ke dua, yaitu pecatur India G.N. Gopal. Di partai dengan pembelaan Sisilia ini, G.N.Gopal punya bangunan yang menjanjikan sebagai hitam, blunder-blunder mewarnai partai catur ini. Di akhir, Gopal adalah yang terakhir blunder dengan menjauhkan menterinya ke tepi dan tidak mengawal petak d7 yang berbahaya. Sean adalah pecatur Indonesia dengan rating tertinggi di tournament ini. Kabarnya sponsor turnamen catur Japfa ini berharap bisa lahir grandmaster-grandmaster baru karena terlihat undangan dan kesempatan hanya diberikan pada pemain dengan gelar non-GM tahun ini.

Hingga ronde dua pecatur Vietnam Nguyen Anh Dung memenangkan 2 partai, melawan Irine di babak 1 dan Tirta Purnama di babak 2. Nguyen menduduki klasemen, disusul sang "suhu" GM Sergei Tiviakov. Turnamen ini akan berlangsung hingga tanggal 23 dengan 11 ronde sistem "Round-Robin" alias semua peserta akan ketemuan. Posisi klasemen sementara bisa dilihat di atas.

Turnamen catur Japfa 2015 ini bisa disaksikan di chessbomb.com dan juga, beberapa sumber mengatakan bisa diakses di PB Percasi, namun masih macet-macet. Semoga di ronde berikutnya sudah lancar untuk diikuti penggemar catur secara online. Mengingat adanya rumor bahwa Jakarta akan menjadi salah satu tuan rumah LIGA Catur Emas bergengsi dunia, maka profesionalisme melangsungkan ajang turnamen catur harusnya segera di"asah" juga di turnamen Japfa ini.

Four Players and Megaranto Shared First - Penang Chess Open 2014

Another open chess tournament in Malaysia, this time take place in Penang Heritage City. From 8-12th December 2014, chess players from nearby countries compete in nine swiss rounds. GM Susanto Megaranto and GM Villamayor "Bong" Buenaventura are the top seeded. Both finished top place but shared with five other players. The venue is Red Rock Hotel in Penang, this is the 6th edition of the tournament.

Malaysia Chess Open 2014 - Zhang Zhong First Place

The region of South Eastern Asia, eco-politically grouped as ASEAN, continues to grow in organizing chess events. We have seen Jakarta Open, KL Open, Bangkok Open, HDBank Ho Chi Minh Open, and numerous in Phillipines, as evidences. This week a mid-strong tournament happened in Kuala Lumpur, officially called 11th IGB Dato Arthur Tan Malaysia Open 2014.

This event dominated by neighboring chess players , with GM Zhang Zhong seeded as #1. Surprisingly, the ex-China still hold 2608 elo rating, traces of his greatness almost decades ago. A Singaporean by now, Zhang Zhong finished the event as sole leader. He clinched the highest place after winning the pen-ultimate round 9 to his ex-countries best player in the field, GM Zhou Jianchao, who seeded as #2. The 2nd place goes to  FM Le Tuan Minh, as the name suggested, from Vietnam. On the third highest points takers, it's looks like five players going to share the position.

On Indonesian account, it seems we sent as many as possible chess players to Malaysia Open 2014. GM Susanto Megaranto leading his colleagues alikes of IM Tirta Purnama Chandra, IM Farid Firman Syah, FM Muh. Luthfi Ali, Medina Aulia and others. Included as well is Indonesian best kept secret, FM Sean Winshand Cuhendi. Sean has his own story. He was more a "non-mainstream" player, acting mostly independent, not much involved in the "official Indonesian squad". What we learn is, he just trained and practiced in Eastern Europe recently. In this tournament, Sean grab the highest place among Indonesian players. His "victims" included two friendly opponents (CM Jodi Setyaki Azarya and FM Mahmud Syarif). One GM (Laxman R.R.), and draws to another two GMs. His performances rating is 2508 and according to chess-results he is going to get about 32.8 FIDE rating. It's about time to learn more about Sean, and giving him the attention he deserved. GM Susanto Megaranto is the 2nd highest on Indonesian account, he is as usual, ultra solid without losses. He has done this many times by now, for not experiencing losses in the whole tournament. WGM Medina Aulia leads the Indonesian girls  but losses to WIM Gong Xiayun (Singapore) as overall highest female contestants. Medina also come out the field without losses and grab 7 additional FIDE points to her ever increasing rating.

Malaysia Open 2014 happening from September 15th to 21st 2014. It is part of so called Malaysia Chess Festival 2014. They included a massive side events such as team tournament and age groups (U-16 to U-8) tournaments. They played in the ballroom hall of Cititel Mid Valley.
