Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 - Round 7

We enter the 4th day of the 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship (IOCC 2013). The participant are over 50+ foreigner players from all around the world and top local players. Quite prestigious by European standard for its 3rd edition by now, as declared by English-man participant GM Nigel Short in the interview during the tournament.

Of course the chess fans attention are widely divided as there are many others elite chess tournaments, also in progress. Notably the Russian Super Final Male and Female version, the King Tournament, Bilbao Super GM Final Masters, and Chigorin Memorial, oh you named it. If I observed correctly , combining last week's FIDE Grand Prix,  all top 20 Chess Player of this week are busy with their tournament, except for Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand, that waiting for the pen ultimate event of the year.

So, with that hectic schedule for the chess spectators, Indonesia Open needed something special to capture the attention. It is easy however, because the broadcast time was about 12 hours earlier than most European events, and especially Indonesia Open was held as two rounds/day (it's not every day, actually) and the watching hours are extended from 9am to 21pm local time. And for this happy hours, the time control for each game also different, and shorter. I noticed there were no 2nd time control. Thus with this in effect, it seems like blunders are hardly to avoid in the last minutes. Meaning, the player almost need to combined the classic time control + blitz skill to win a single game. But for spectators this is actually attractive menu to watch!

There are a lot of blunders, here some of most puzzle-like and decisive:

Alexander Moiseenko vs Darwin Laylo 1-0, Round 7
was the quite dramatic, the player takes turn to give a blunder after 26..Kf6. Moiseenko was unfortunate in round 6 earlier morning. According to arbiter in social network chat, he simply arriving late in the hall to play Alexey Dreev, eventhough the tournament did not use a zero start rule (it will never be used in Indonesia by nature ;p), but there were a 30 minutes grace period, before declared as W.O.

Grigoryan Avetik vs Elizabeth Paethz 0-1, Round 7
after complication post the opening, white make a tactical error. Can you spot the winning move for black? Amazingly Elizabeth did it, and thus she was standing as the highest rank female at the current standing.

Nigel Short vs John Paul Gomez 1-0, Round 7
Nigel Short ended his streak of draw with this miniature win. After the French Opening, black made a mistake, Nigel Short thinks for a moment and landed the blowing move...

Alexander Cherniaev vs Gopal GN 0-1, Round 5
Almost quite elementary blunder, but this was in time trouble as I remember. Simply tactic give black a winning position.

Ivan Sokolov vs Vadim Malakhatko 0.5-0.5, Round 5
Again, this one is a slip victory for Ivan. After a fine intensive game and reach this end game position, white just not having enough time to find the winning move, the game then draw.

Salem AR Saleh vs Tirta Purnama Chandra 0-1, Round 4
The local players are not doing great in their turf home. Only veteran IM Dede Lioe still catching the rope with his 2600 performance. Round 4 was the last to witness local boys defeating GM for this moment. White simply error in the last minute and saw Black easily landed a beautiful attack to end the game.

All game can be viewed below, including GM Alexey Dreev vs GM Susanto Megaranto in round 4, where the highest local player can't refuse the American to take revenge over their 2011 encounter.

Olympiad 2010 R2 - Tirta Purnama Beats Smirin

Medina draw melawan Nisha Mohote.

Match 4. Israel Indonesia - Round 2

Sutovsky, Emil vs Megaranto, Susanto  1/2-1/2
Smirin, Ilia vs Purnama, Tirta Chandra 0-1
Rodshtein, Maxim vs Novita, Anjas 1-0
Mikhalevski, Victor vs Irwanto, Sadikin 1/2-1/2

Women:
Match 7. Indonesia India

Sukandar, Irine Kharisma - Harika, Dronavalli 0-1
Dewi, AA Citra - Tania, Sachdev 0-1
Sihite, Chelsie Monica - Karavade, Eesha 0-1
Medina, Warda Aulia - Mohota, Nisha 1/2-1/2

Sementara itu berita trivia lainnya adalah:
Babak 1 pecatur berating 1700 Jason menang checkmate melawan GM Emre Can.

Asian Team Championship-Round 6

India A won the Tata Steel Asian Team Chess Championship 2009 Men's section. India A get 12 match points after finishing Singapore 3.5-0.5 in round 6, while nearest rivals like Vietnam and Iran still at 9 match points. In round 6 Indonesian's men join the misery company, suffering a 4-0 lost to Vietnam.

GM Megaranto face a well known GM Le Quang Liem, the game went in classical battle of Nimzo India Defence with bishop pair vs knight+bishop. Black slowly outplayed in this positional game.

Most exciting game is IM Tirta Chandra Purnama vs GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Black played an intrique bishop sacrifice 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 6.Ne5 e6 7.f3 Bb4 8.e4 Bxe4!? and force White's king to flee his comfortable square in the next moves. White again gains much promising attack in kingside but a weak 36.b5? spoiled everything.

GM Bui Vinh played an aggresive early Trompowsky's Bishop vs FM Anjas Novita and wins. While Farid Firmansyah get out of a promising Ruy Lopez opening but soon went into lost position and jumped into a mate pattern by GM Nguyen Anh Dung who played the Black side. This concluded a 4-0 victory by Vietnam but the result is very much reflected to their respective rating, as condolence words...

The Indonesian Women team also lost 3.5-0.5 with only WGM Irene manage to secured half point over WGM Le Thanh Tu whom several points above Irene. Live and replay games http://www.asianteamchess09.com/livegames.asp

5 INDIA A (9) Bye

Perebutan juara pertama di Kejuaraan Beregu Asia Kolkatta musti diakhiri setelah India A berhasil mencapai 12 match point.
