Ini merupakan terjemahan dari artikel berbahasa Inggris yang dimuat di website Chessbase India, berjudul "Why Indonesia Will be a super power in chess soon". Artikel ini ditulis oleh IM Sagar Shah, yang merupakan salah satu penulis aktif di grup Chessbase. Inti dari artikel ini adalah pemaparan Sagar Shah mengenai even seminar catur oleh IM Jacob Aagaard yang diundang ke Indonesia bulan April 2017 lalu. Mengapa Indonesia Akan Segera Menjadi Super Power di Catur

Ketika India dan China telah menjadi kekuatan catur di Asia, sebuah negara dengan penduduk sekitar 250 juta jiwa sedang mempersiapkan dirinya untuk mencetak pecatur terbaik di dunia catur. Di artikel ini saya akan membawa pembaca mengikuti petualangan Jacob Aagard ke Sekolah Catur Utut Adianto di Bekasi. Dari pengalaman ini, kami memperkirakan dalam beberapa tahun mendatang, murid-murid catur di Indonesia akan segera mulai mengalahkan pecatur dunia. Ini merupakan artikel terakhir dari kisah tour Jacob Aagard ke Asia.

Catatan penulis : Jacob Aagaard adalah seorang International Master dari Inggris yang aktif menulis buku pelajaran catur. Sebagai penulis yang fasih dalam menerangkan pelajaran catur, Jacob Aagaard diundang ke Indonesia untuk memberikan seminar kepada pecatur dan penggemar catur di Indonesia.

Perhentian terakhir tour Asia Jacob Aagaard adalah di negara Indonesia. Setelah mengunjungi Indonesia, saya (Sagar Shah) sangat kagum dan yakin bahwa negara ini juga gila catur. Kamu bisa melihat bahwa masyarakat di sini gemar bermain catur. Menurut Sagar Shah, hanya dengan menyebutkan Percasi dan Utut Adianto, sudah cukup untuk membawa mereka dengan lancar ke meja imigrasi, dari kedatangannya di airport.

Di era '90, Utut Adianto adalah salah satu pecatur terkuat dunia. Dia telah mengalahkan Anatoly Karpov, draw melawan Gary Kasparov dan bertukar jurus dengan berbagai pendekar catur kelas dunia. Sekarang Utut berusia 52 tahun dan menjabat sebagai anggota dewan. Utut juga menyempatkan diri turun di Olimpiade Catur di Baku tahun lalu dengan score 5/6. Ratingnya adalah 2566 dan masih merupakan pecatur Indonesia urutan satu (....Susanto Megaranto adalah di rating 2527 saat ini)

Penulis (Sagar Shah) terkesan dengan pertemuan ini , di mana pak Utut membicarakan perkembangan catur di India dan Chessbase India. Tentunya Sagar Shah juga membujuk pak Utut untuk menunjukkan partai-partai catur nya kepada pembaca.

"Ada banyak partai catur", ujar Utut Adianto, tapi saya sekarang ingat yang ini. Yaitu partai Utut Adianto vs Vadim Milov, Biel 1994. 

Utut Adianto Turun Gunung - Chess Olympiad 2016 Round 9

Indonesia legendary grandmaster, Utut Adianto, has finally comeback to (serious) chess competition. As we reported in previously, the 2016 chess Olympiad in Baku is going on and most of Indonesian top chess players are unable to travel due to local scheduling conflict.  In this case, GM Utut Adianto himself "down from the mountain" / turun gunung, for playing and defending Indonesia team. Thus making Indonesia's team for Baku 2016 become quite a legendary formation for years.

After 2016 round 9 in Baku, team Indonesia slowly climb back to position #67 by beating neighbor Malaysia team. GM Utut Adianto played board 1 started in round 6 and already score 3.5/4, he duly draw against very strong Montenegro grandmaster Nikola Djukic, while crushing all his lower rated opponents. GM Utut Adianto is having full time jobs and commitment as government legislative member. He is still an active player in Indonesia chess federation as mentor.

Well, we coming up with GM Utut Adianto with 2556 elo rating!

In ladies section, the Indonesian team lost their first 0-4 against team Colombia. The whole ladies section perhaps tired after nine rounds of roller coaster pairings. They are now in position 69.

Grandmaster Utut Adianto akhirnya turun gunung juga membela tim Indonesia untuk event Chess Olympiad (Catur) di Baku 2016. Setelah rombongan team Indonesia berjerih lelah membela tim Indonesia hingga round 5, GM Utut terbang menuju negara Azerbaijan dan turun membela tim papan pertama mulai round 6. Setelah bermain sebanyak 4x, pak dewan Utut mengantongi "performance" 3.5/4. Semua lawan-lawan yang lebih lemah berhasil ditundukkan, hanya ketika bertemu lawan bergelar GM (Nikola Djukic) dari Montenegro, Utut menahan remis.

Walau demikian prestasi team Indonesia di Baku masih naik turun, di round 8 ketika bertemu team Montenegro, Indonesia musti kembali puas kalah tipis 1.5-2.5. Namun demikian posisi regu Indonesia yang juga diperkuat IM Muhammad Ali Lutfi dan IM Irwanto Sadikin lambat namun pasti mulai memperbaiki posisi. Biel Master 2013 - Pentala Harikhrisna Winner

First, in 'Grandmaster' category of Biel Chess Festival 2013, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave need to went into tie break match in order to wins the Olivier Breisacher Memorial. The tournament saw some upset for Chinese young lads GM Ding Liren who come with decent chances to compete for first prize, when later tie break he lost to Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. In final rapid match, Vachier-Lagrave defeated Alexander Moiseenko thus claimed the first prize in this 'Grandmaster' category. However, in Master category, Pentala Harikhrisna was a sole winner. He soundly beat Daniel Hausrath when their game in Caro-Kann just open up some spaces. The other contender was GM Bartel Marteuz, but Indonesian player GM Susanto Megaranto was able to force a draw in final pair bishop vs knight-bishop ending. By this result, most of Indonesian top players who participating in Biel Master 2013 have finish in middle top and with positive results. GM Utut Adianto by far still the highest scorer. Utut duly overplay rising star Farid Firmansyah in a game of Nimzo Indian. The 'mentor' dictated the game from the opening and Farid just can't hold in the first time control and white flagged on move 40.

Turnament kategori 'Master' di Biel, Swiss telah berakhir. Demikian rombongan pecatur Indonesia menempatkan GM Utut Adianto di urutan ke-enam di klasemen akhir. Utut bernilai 7.5/11 , hanya selisih 1 point dari pemenang turnament yaitu GM Pentala Harikhrisna yang mengantongi nilai 8.5/11. GM Susanto Megaranto sendiri juga di urutan ke-delapan, Susanto menggagalkan pecatur Polandia GM Bartel Mateuz untuk ikutan jadi juara, karena Susanto menahan remis Bartel, yang hanya selisih setengah point dengan Pentala Harikhrisna. Dengan hasil ini kebanyakan pemain 'Merah Putih' tetap mengakhiri turnamen dengan angka plus. Farid Firmansyah menjadi pecatur paling menjanjikan dengan penampilan yang cukup dramatis, mampu mengalahkan beberapa pecatur kuat di atas ratingnya, yang juga bertitle Grandmaster. Di bagian Puteri, Medina akhirnya mengejar WGM Irene di perolehan angka, Medina mengumpulkan setengah angka terakhir di babak ke sebelas dengan mengalahkan lawan dari Jerman, FM Rasch Holger. Medina juga meraih juara ke-2 kelompok catur klasik wanita. Di turnamen Utama / Main (rating under 2000), Nadya Anggraeni finish di urutan ke-3. Juga Susanto Megaranto yang meraih juara 3 di Catur acak Chess960. Selamat untuk prestasi para pecatur di Biel 2013. 

Di kategori Grandmaster, pecatur terkuat Prancis saat ini , Maxime Vachier-Lagrave mengklaim juara pertama melalui babak tie-break yang seru. Maxime mengalahkan Alexander Moiseenko di babak terakhir. Urutan pemenang di kategori Grandmaster ini adalah:

3. Etienne Bacrot (according to the Sonneborn-Berger system)

Pecatur China terundang yaitu GM Ding Liren bermain apik di turnamen ini, hanya sayang memang masih kalah pengalaman dibanding pecatur Eropa lainnya. Catatan lain, Richard Rapport merupakan pecatur Hungaria belia yang baru berusia 17 tahun. Richard bermain tergolong bermain penuh agresif untuk kategori '2700', mengakibatkan dia dengan mudah ditaklukan pecatur 'solid' lainnya.

Penghargaan partai catur pilihan juga diberikan oleh junta catur dari Rusia, Oleg Skvortsov.

Indonesian chess players celebrated their first outstanding individual result by witnessing WIM Medina Warda Aulia (2286) knock downed GM Alexander Cherniaev (2447) in English Opening, round 4 Biel Master 2013. Notes that this is the 'senior' Alexander Cherniaev born 1969, not to be confused by other.

Penggemar catur Indonesia patut berbangga menyambut kemenangan Master Internasional Wanita Medina Aulia Warda yang berhasil mengalahkan Grand Master Alexander Cherniaev. GM Alexander Cherniaev, lahir 1969 (karena ada Cherniaev lainnya), ditantang Aulia yg memegang buah hitam melalui pembukaan Inggris, permainan mengarah ke situasi liar dan penuh taktik. Aulia berhasil menjawab problem permainan tengah dengan langkah yang lebih tepat dan putih menyerah di pertarungan Ratu + Benteng di langkah ke 47. Sementara itu Grand Master paling popular Indonesia, Utut Adianto menyusul rekan-rekan junior mereka dan terjun juga di turnamen Biel Master 2013. Indonesia menerbangkan beberapa pecatur ke ajang Biel di Swiss sebagai ajang pemanasan menjelang SEA Games mendatang di Myanmar. Patut diketahui di cabang catur, saingan Indonesia di SEA Games yaitu Philipines dan Vietnam telah jauh memiliki formasi tim catur yang kelas dunia, semoga pecatur Indonesia yang warming up di 'hanya sekelas' Biel Master bisa memetik kesempatan ini sebaik mungkin. Sekilas info di Biel juga menampilkan turnamen kelas papan atas mereka yaitu kelas Grandmaster, dengan rating 2690+ ke atas.

US Championship 2009 and many more

An epic month for chess now. Azerbaijan is enjoying playing chess against FIDE "World" team here, the Chinese held a big banquet with many grandmasters including Pinoy rising star Wesley So (Mr. Su Weili) playing in team league,report on blog here , Topalov and his gang in MTEL master kick off on 21 May here.

Closer to home, GM Utut Adianto made appearances in chessbase for .... his success on Indonesian Senate Election. Let's hope he still have many times for chess. Also next week will be held in Phillipine 8th Asian Continental / Individual Men’s and Women’s Chess Championship where Indonesian first WGM Irene Kharisma Sukandar will be playing.

For now let's enjoy some show for United State where US Chess Championship 2009 started in Saint Louis Chess Club.

Indonesia's April '09 Top Player

Susanto Megaranto is now Indonesian no.1 player with 2553 elo point while the GM Utut Adianto come second with 2548. While Indonesian first ever Grandmaster Irene Kharisma Sukandar now with 2300 point. Here the rating list with inactive player excluded excepted for the late GM Edhi Handoko, who passed away early this year.

Classic Chess Problem : How to solve a chess problem

This is another classic article by GM Utut Adianto for Bola Magazine from July 1997 issue. It give us a basic on how to solve a chess problem. The four tips by him are :

1. Find a possibility (position/move) on how to checkmate the King
2. Expand imagination as wide as possible
3. Thinks un-logical move to become logical
4. Understand the theme

Utut Adianto beat Indonesian Top Illusionist in Chess Match

Indonesian top chess player Grandmaster Utut Adianto, in his rematch, finally beat Deddy Corbuzier, Indonesian top illusionist. This is a rematch of previously done in September 2007 when the two celebrity from different world face each other. On that match the outcome was not decided because of Utut Adianto's protested on his opponent's behaviour during the match. Deddy was playing trick by making a noise by knocking on the table, touching the chess pieces but not move it, and most notorious by starring at Utut all the time during the match. Utut, being nervous, reportly blunder a pieces but then the match become blurred after Utut's protest.

Recently, 6th February 2009, the two agree to continue the rivalry and the match succesfully being hosted on national television RCTI's show, the Master. For this match, the player agree to modified some International rules such as Utut being allowed to put on sunglasses (to neglected the effect on being starred) and Deddy allowed to touching the chess pieces.

But, main story is, Utut beat Corbuzier, which is not surprising only after that he opened the covered chess diagram and showed everyone the same checkmated position as the game just played. So Deddy succesfully 'predicted' the final position of the game.

So what the secret? It's a 13 moves game, can this a 13 move force mate? still the possibility to achieve this are very small, I mean after 1.e4 how many possibility you expect to have ...e5 ?
