Of course the chess fans attention are widely divided as there are many others elite chess tournaments, also in progress. Notably the Russian Super Final Male and Female version, the King Tournament, Bilbao Super GM Final Masters, and Chigorin Memorial, oh you named it. If I observed correctly , combining last week's FIDE Grand Prix, all top 20 Chess Player of this week are busy with their tournament, except for Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand, that waiting for the pen ultimate event of the year.
So, with that hectic schedule for the chess spectators, Indonesia Open needed something special to capture the attention. It is easy however, because the broadcast time was about 12 hours earlier than most European events, and especially Indonesia Open was held as two rounds/day (it's not every day, actually) and the watching hours are extended from 9am to 21pm local time. And for this happy hours, the time control for each game also different, and shorter. I noticed there were no 2nd time control. Thus with this in effect, it seems like blunders are hardly to avoid in the last minutes. Meaning, the player almost need to combined the classic time control + blitz skill to win a single game. But for spectators this is actually attractive menu to watch!
There are a lot of blunders, here some of most puzzle-like and decisive:
Alexander Moiseenko vs Darwin Laylo 1-0, Round 7
was the quite dramatic, the player takes turn to give a blunder after 26..Kf6. Moiseenko was unfortunate in round 6 earlier morning. According to arbiter in social network chat, he simply arriving late in the hall to play Alexey Dreev, eventhough the tournament did not use a zero start rule (it will never be used in Indonesia by nature ;p), but there were a 30 minutes grace period, before declared as W.O.
Grigoryan Avetik vs Elizabeth Paethz 0-1, Round 7
after complication post the opening, white make a tactical error. Can you spot the winning move for black? Amazingly Elizabeth did it, and thus she was standing as the highest rank female at the current standing.
Nigel Short vs John Paul Gomez 1-0, Round 7
Nigel Short ended his streak of draw with this miniature win. After the French Opening, black made a mistake, Nigel Short thinks for a moment and landed the blowing move...
Alexander Cherniaev vs Gopal GN 0-1, Round 5
Almost quite elementary blunder, but this was in time trouble as I remember. Simply tactic give black a winning position.
Ivan Sokolov vs Vadim Malakhatko 0.5-0.5, Round 5
Again, this one is a slip victory for Ivan. After a fine intensive game and reach this end game position, white just not having enough time to find the winning move, the game then draw.
Salem AR Saleh vs Tirta Purnama Chandra 0-1, Round 4
The local players are not doing great in their turf home. Only veteran IM Dede Lioe still catching the rope with his 2600 performance. Round 4 was the last to witness local boys defeating GM for this moment. White simply error in the last minute and saw Black easily landed a beautiful attack to end the game.
