Biel Master 2013 Round Ten

Victories over stronger GMs are the highlight news for Indonesian chess players 'contingent', who play in 2013 Biel International Chess Festival. These results keep them close to the top of table and put some of them as serious contender for prizes. The event has now reach round ten, notable victory result of the round are from Susanto Megaranto who defeated GM Ognjen Cvitan , quite a senior Grandmaster from Croatia. Susanto also defeated GM Sandipan Chanda on previous round nine. Susanto is only half point away from tournament leader Bartel Marteuz, in fact Susanto will face against him on round 11. With result from round ten, Susanto collected 7 points, catched his 'mentor' GM Utut Adianto who drew to GM Tigran Gharamian and now respectively stand by 6.5 points.

IM Farid Firmansyah also score important victory over GM A.R. Saleh, keeping him as the highest third Indonesian player on the field. He also defeat GM Vadim  Malakhatko on round 8. This followed by Medina who also reach the same point as Irene, together by 5.5 points. Irene has been highest INA girl before 'settled' with a draw with fellow Rahman Masruri, allowing Medina to rise up. Irene key game with GM Zhao Xue did not turn well as she defeated by the Chinese girl.

About nine chess players from Indonesia participating in 'Master' section of 2013 Biel International Chess Festival, included are Indonesian most popular GM Utut Adianto who just returned to chess on this event. The group travel half world away from Jakarta. As Indonesian sources mentioned, this participation will accounted as warm up exercise before jump into SEA Games (South East Asian's Olympiad) later.

Other news, Susanto Megaranto score bronze medal in Chess960 events, the winner was Jan Smeets and runner-up Tigran Gharamian. On Blitz event, Farid Firmansyah reach number seven on final standing, but Chelsie Monica called as 'best women' on the section. On Main event, Nadia Anggraeni and Dita Karenza have seriously contending for prizes, after round eight however, only Nadia remained on top with 6.5 points while Dita fallen to only 5 points.

Menyimak sepak terjang rombongan pecatur Indonesia di ajang festival catur 2013 bertempat di Biel, Swiss. Beberapa pemain catur Indonesia membukukan kemenangan atas grandmaster-grandmaster catur yang hadir di tempat. Antara lain di babak 10, Susanto Megaranto mengalahkan pecatur cukup senior dari Kroasia, GM Ognjen Cvitan, di mana di ronde 9, Megaranto juga telah melewati tantangan Grandmaster dari India, Chanda Sandipan. Kemenangan ini membuat Susanto Megaranto mengejar 'guru' GM Utut Adianto. Utut yang sebelumnya menjadi pecatur terbaik Indonesia di festival Biel, harus puas melewati dua hasil remis, terutama di ronde 10 Utut draw melawan GM Tigran Gharamian. 

Berita baik juga dibukukan Farid Firmansyah yang juga mengaet dua kemenangan atas pecatur bertitel Grandmaster. Yaitu di ronde 8 melawan GM Vadim Malakhatko dan di ronde sepuluh melawan GM AR Saleh. Di rombongan puteri, Irene terkejar Medina Aulia dalam posisi pecatur puteri teratas setelah gagal menahan GM Zhao Xue di ronde sembilan, dan harus bermain remis dengan pak Masruri Rahman. Medina di papan lain mengalahkan FM Lang Torsten.  Posisi sementara hasil Biel Master 2013 bisa dilihat di atas. Di berita lainnya, GM Susanto Megaranto meraih ranking tiga di cabang catur960, kemudian Chelsie Monica dinobatkan sebagai 'best women' di cabang catur kilat, Farid Firmansyah menempati urutan ke tujuh di cabang ini. Sementara itu di turnamen 'Utama' / Main section, Dita Karenza dan Nadia Anggreani masih saling genjot untuk bertahan di zona 'berhadiah'. Setelah melewati babak ke delapan Dita tampak mulai ketinggalan meninggalkan Nadia untuk bertahan di papan atas.

GM Alexander Cherniaev, lahir 1969 (karena ada Cherniaev lainnya), ditantang Aulia yg memegang buah hitam melalui pembukaan Inggris, permainan mengarah ke situasi liar dan penuh taktik. Chess Played at 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2013

If you haven't got enough of Olympic, here another multi sports event. The Asian countries have organized a new set of specific sports and put it together as Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games (AIMAG). Basically there are indoor sports with something more Asian cultured games rather than Western's (think basketball or golf...). So we are able to see something like Kickboxing, Muay or Kabaddi . Then we have Oriental games such as Go, and of course along that Chess. In an eyebrow rising event, there also exists electronic games, included are FIFA 2013, Starcraft, Tekken 3, Need For Speed and so on. There also dance sports. So, by far the categories are still vogue, but I bet the Asian going to work this way out in the future.

This year is Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games go to their 4th cycle, the host is Incheon, South Korea. Our main interest in chess event. According to Wikipedia, there going to be four medals in chess:

While Viswanathan Anand obviously would go to Asian Indoor Games, two former FIDE Female Chess Champion, Hou Yifan and Zhu Chen duly present China and Qatar federation. In fact, chess in AIMAG lack of Indian players, (notes: AOI federation is present). This would make China federation without much countering power, except for Vietnam maybe.

Hou Yifan had no problem along her three games. Her strongest opponent by far was Indonesia's WGM Irine K. Sukandar. Playing in Closed Sicilian defence, Irine never cracked the opening. At move 12...Nxf3 she follow aggresive Knight manuever but risk open up a files for rook for a compensation of two isolated and double up pawns on white side. The challenge was never too much for white, but successful in forcing the game into Knight vs Bishop endgames. In a difficult endgame, Irine failed to defence and let white's stronger pawn in the King's side to advance.

Partai catur Hou Yifan vs Irine Kharisma Sukandar , Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013. Dengan pembelaan Sisilia tertutup Irine membalaskan langkah 1.e4 sang mantan juara dunia wanita Hou Yifan. Sepanjang pembukaan tampak di komputer bahwa Irine tidak terlalu mampu memberi jawaban yang berbahaya untuk putih. Pembukaan berlanjut dengan manuver agresif Irine hingga di langkah 12... hitam memaksa putih untuk bermain dengan struktur bidak yang lebih jelek, yaitu bidak tumpuk dan ter-isolasi. Tetapi tantangan ini tidak membahayakan putih, walaupun mampu menahan permainan hingga ke posisi permainan akhir dengan pola Kuda vs Gajah. Di permainan akhir yang lebih rumit ini Irine gagal menemukan pertahanan terbaik dan membiarkan bidak putih di sayap raja untuk lebih sukses mencapai garis promosi. Di posisi akhir, hitam tidak mampu menjawab ancaman kuda putih di 43. Nf6 (Kf6, notasi Indonesia) dan harus menyerah.

Irene Sukandar Won Alexander the Great 2013 Chess Tournament

On her social network, Indonesian WGM Irene Kharisma Sukandar informed us that she just won the chess tournament somewhere in Mediterranean sea. When we checked, indeed she duly won 5th INTERNATIONAL OPEN CHESS TOURNAMENT “ALEXANDER THE GREAT 2013” held in seaside tourism resort city in Halkidiki, Northern Greece from 7 May (1st round) to 12 May 2013 (7th round).

Irene is traveling overseas along with her sister.  This is her first tournament overseas and we proudly reported her great result. She informed that she ".....gained back 25 elo points. My live rating is now 2395, 5 more to go to break the 2400 mark".  And that she going to be in Hungary next. She won the tournament 1st prize and best Women title. The result strengthen Irene reputation as South East Asia's most stubborn female fighter. She is also the held Asian Individual winner title. The news also can be found at this website.

Melalui jejaring sosialnya, Grandmaster catur wanita Indonesia Irene K. Sukandar menginformasikan bahwa dia memenangkan turnamen catur "Alexander the Great" di negara Yunani. Bertualang bersama Diajeng adiknya, semula sang grandmaster hanya bermaksud menemani si adik, tetapi kemudian keikutsertaanya di turnamen terbuka membawa hasil yang menggembirakan. Irene mengakhiri turnamen dengan skor 6 point dari 7 ronde. Berikut papan skor final dari turnament tersebut dan partai catur Irene melawan master setempat melalui partai yang dibuka dengan pembelaan Empat Kuda / Four Knight Game defence.

Alina L'Ami Won Jakarta Japfa Festival 2013

The 2013 edition of Chess Festival in Jakarta, Japfa International had been concluded. The main event consisted of all females (the beauties, they dubbed...) won by Alina L'Ami. The contest held from April 14th 2013 for a week. Not much information can gathered from internet, only few official's snaps taken from Facebook to let us to get a bit of feeling around the tournament.

London 2013 Winner: Carlsen (vs Anand)

Turnament kandidat penantang juara dunia catur di London berakhir dengan Magnus Carlsen sebagai juara. Walaupun di ronde terakhir Carlsen dikalahkan oleh pecatur Rusia Peter Svidler, namun saingan terdekat, mantan juara dunia, Vladimir Kramnik juga dikalahkan pecatur flamboyan Vasily Ivanchuk. Dengan hasil ini juara dunia catur saat ini Vishwanathan Anand akan ditantang Magnus Carlsen di edisi turnamen juara catur dunia berikutnya. Magnus Carlsen adalah pecatur muda dari Norwegia yang juga pecatur dengan rating tertinggi dunia saat ini. Dia pernah berlatih di bawah bimbingan Garry Kasparov dan memang dijagokan untuk menantang Anand sekaligus bahkan menjadi juara dunia baru. Hasil terakhir dari turnament London 2013 FIDE Candidate tournament bisa dilihat di bawah.

London 2013 FIDE Candidate tournament just over few minutes ago. Both top contender, Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik dramatically lost in the last round. Carlsen lost to Svidler while Kramnik suffered the 'up-the-roller-coaster-moment' Ivanchuk. Although Ivanchuk play extremely unstabil result of the tournament, he is again prove to be one of main attraction in every tournament he join in. Same thing to Peter Svidler who just finished with a plus score.

Ironic lost to Kramnik who gain momentum in the last part of tournament but must surrender the ticket to meet Anand to Carlsen. Both come with same score but Kramnik is sort of one win, so the Norwegian wonder is instead the challenger of World Chess Championship title, against Vishwanatan Anand later on. After twenty years, who may predict it will be Norwegia vs India for the chess title!

Levon Aronian is half point behind leaders, so do Peter Svidler. While Boris Gelfand and Alexander Grischuk make a good playing chess friends for the rest. Invited Teimour Radjabov will need to prove he is serious participant in the top ten of chess for rest of his life. He is on the last position.

BTW, this is not an APRIL Fool joke!
