Dr Nazrin Shah KL Open - Oliver Barbosa Wins

Although the chess-result.com shows IM Nguyen Doc Hoa as first position finisher, but it is confirmed in Peter Long chess and klchess.com that Phillipino IM Oliver Barbosa is the winner of Dr Nazrin Shah KL Open 2011. The Kuala Lumpur Chess website also confirmed GM title on pape for IM Oliver Barbosa and Richard Bitoon, as well IM tile and GM norm for Jahongir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan.

Indonesian delegation in Open name the best performer is IM Tirta Purnama, with 6.5/9 rounds, he is tie second in theory. GM Megaranto, straight from World Chess Cup in Siberia, finished 5.5/9 , drawing many games and slighty under performed here. WGM Irene Sukandar is also 5.5/9 but she is "over performed" in relation to her rating, she is undefeated (as well Megaranto).

2011 World Chess Cup Judit Joint Quarter Final

Come back from her first game lost to L.Dominguez, Judit Polgar bounced and bounced from any kind of positions into a winning one. Her second normal round against Dominguez was an epic battle up to hundred moves, she sure missed the "easy" Kc1 mate, then she went through a random moves of R+B vs R endgame and finally found the winning pattern to secured the tie break.

On tie break, Judit executed again, the Sicilian as Black and get quite straightforward win. But the second tie break, Judith went "not drawish" opening, the Scandinavian, and quickly got drug by the Cuban and drag into hard work once again. Here another drama happening, the third game worked almost a win for Black's Sicilian, but then again Dominguez out of nowhere take the poisonous pawn on b2 and Judit line up forces of Queen and Rook is enough to push a win. And so did the fourth game bring back Dominguez, and both enjoying themself to the blitz. It is only the last blitz, Judit manage to score final point, with Black side of Sicilian.

So, Judit will play Peter Svidler, whom sitting comfortably waiting since yesterday, after he eliminated Kamsky in no less spectacular game than Judit's.

Other Indonesian closer keep up competition, until round six, GM Megaranto collected 4.5 point, taken from three wins and thre draws. Follow by GM Cerdas Barus with same 4.0/6 rounds and same to WGM Irene K. Sukandar as well.

Story of the round was the Moiseenko vs Navara board. After playing sharp opening with Queen Indian 3..b6 and 4.g3, on move 35, Navara accidentally, out of consciousness, touch the King first but in his mind it is a Bishop he need to move. It was indeed the Bishop and King stand each other closely. Navara account :  " On the 35th move I accidentally touched both pieces " the king and the bishop. I wanted to move my bishop on d6, but clipped the king also, however, Moiseenko insists that I have first touched the king, but I am not sure about that. Any move with the king would lead to the loss of the piece, however, Moiseenko did not insist that I make my move namely with it. I did not want to be referred as to the unethical chess player who managed to win in an unfair way,that is why at the end, having achieved the winning position, I offered a draw.


Alexander Moiseenko: " Navara on the 35th move first touched the king. I told him: the king moves. However, I realized that my opponent accidentally made this mistake, it is not possible that he could so easily blunder the piece. This is the reason I did not insist on his move with the king. Let us remind you that if you are knocked out in the 3rd round you get 12800 dollars, and the qualification for the 4th one guarantees you the minimum prize of 20 000 dollars. Besides, the winner of this match will continue fighting for three tickets to the World Championship

In this tense situation perhaps we should remember Navara is ,as long as I remember, having an autism in his younger year. Maybe that added something. But overall, we should praised this as fair play by both and at least we got the extra tie break for today. The winner will face winner of Mamedyarov vs Zerebukh, which is the biggest seed gap pairing that goes to tie break today.

Updated : Navara struggling to went blitz in tie break, but finally able to give a positive story on his side. His next opponent is surprise winner Zerebukh, Zerebukh refuke Mamedyarov 1.5-0.5.

2011 World Cup Le Quang Liem advanced 3rd round

After eliminating GM Megaranto Susanto on round one and GM Boris Grachev on round two, GM Le Quang Liem secured third round spot. He will face either GM Lazaro Bruzon or GM Vallejo Pons, both must play extra tie break round as they shared point in their two encounters.

His fellow countryman, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also scored very good result, halting super GM Peter Svidler into two draws and now proceed to tie break. Nguyen halting Peter with a fast 21 moves Tarrasch's French Defence and 30 moves Neo Gruenfeld, should be Peter specialist! Previously, Nguyen had eliminated China hot player Li Chao.

Another SE Asianer, GM Wesley So struggling againts super GM Sergey Karjakin and today will playing extra tie break session. Both game of them finished in a draw, in move 31 on French Defence and move 26 on Nimzo Indian. It'll be great to see another breakthrough from Wesley So as in previous World Cup, where he eliminated Ivanchuk and Kamsky. But for a note, GM Sergey Karjakin is a serious contender for this World Cup session where he seeded as no.1. Winner of Wesley So vs Karjakin will face GM Judith Polgar.

From China, it's surprising to see how many of Panda men falling from rounds. The only surviving are GM Bu Xiangzhi vs GM Maxime V Lagrave, and GM Ni Hua vs GM Ruslan Ponomariov, both going to tie break. GM Ruslan Ponomariov is experienced World Cup KO players, if not specialist.

Quite successful this year, winning the one good title, Svidler is the 90s generation that haven't got memorable chess no.1 achievement. Gashimov move are considered "easy" with two very low opponents around, while Tomashevsky must eliminated a fair "stronger" GMs. Interesting is, although both are active players in same territory, looks like this will be their first encounter.

On the other hand, Ivanchuk and Sutovsky are regular play mate, but from Chessgames database, Ivanchuk outplayed Sutovsky in breaking 6-0. Strongly advise Ivanchuk to play another round advance. Chess World Cup 2011 Susanto Megaranto arrived

2011 Chess World Cup started today with a ceremony. According to many reports, there are only two players technically missed the event, Wang Hao and Vladimir Akopian, due to health problem Their opponents GM Alexander Ivanov and GM Parimarjan Negi qualify automatically for the next round. Ivanov will play the winner of Lysyj – Kobalia, while Negi is expecting an opponent from the match Radjabov – De La Paz.

From Indonesia, Reported by potretcatur.blogspot.com, GM Susanto Megaranto just arrived on site on Friday. Susanto come with his trainer and directly from Yekaterinburg, especially trained for his round one against Vietnam super GM Le Quang Liem. Liem is hundreds point above his South Eastern Asian colleague.
