World Cup Round 4-Pairing Comments
Round 4 pairing is up, with lesser pairing mean more comments can be put in for each the pairing. Here some from chessgames.com’s member ezzy and some trivia I added (in blue color text).
Vachier Lagrave - Gelfand
What a year for Vachier-Lagrave. World junior champion and Biel international winner! has knocked out 2 Chinese players in the world cup, and his reward for a great year is a pairing with the top seed in the tournament Boris Gelfand. They both played 2 draws against each other at the Biel tournament this year.
Meanwhile, Gelfand also had a nice year, having winning the ACP World rapid cup, beating Svidler in final, although Svidler blunders help Gelfand clinched the title. The age different is span quite wide, so also a battle of generation here.
Grischuk - Jakovenko
Grischuk hasn't beat Jakovenko in classical chess, but he beat Jakovenko twice in the world blitz championship this year. Jakovenko therefore will NOT want this to go to tiebreak. Close call this one.
Both had been pushed until tiebreak yesterday so equal preparation.
Laznicka - Mamedyarov
Laznicka is the 61 seed and lowest rated player left in. He's playing 'out of his skin' in this tournament though, beating Morozevich 2-0 in the 2nd round. Another tough challenge against Mamedyarov who is the only player not yet to go to a tiebreak. They have met each other twice before with 1 draw and 1 win for Mamedyarov. Mamedyarov will be the favourite, but so was Morozevich.
Mame is doing a Fischer-like tournament so far, Wang Hao is his strongest opponent so far in term of rating.
Karjakin - Vitiugov
Only played each other once, and that was this year, and a 21 move draw.
Vitiugov seems to be a steadily improving 22 year old. This is his second world cup and usually qualifies through good performances in the European championships, where 3 years running he finished only 1/2pt behind the winners score.
I can't see further than Karjakin though, A major winner this year at Corus!
Gashimov - Caruana
First ever meeting for these two. Gashimov beat 2 Chinese players and Caruana knocked out 2 Cuban's on their way to 4th round. Caruana's route to the 4th round has been extremely impressive beating Bruzon, Dominguez and Alekseev. A fascinating match! Could this be a big breakthrough for another talented youngster?
And again with no intention to be little Gashimov achievement so far, his opponent rating are 2405, 2596 (Zhou) and 2628 (Li Chao) mean average is 2543. Caruana is his strongest test to advance to next round. Gashimov is luckiest in round 1 againt Li Chao, having in line of defeat but survived with a draw. In tie break, the Chinese join a “Smoking Company” with Wang Yue and give one round victory to Gashimov.
Bacrot - Ponomariov
The battle of 2 chess prodigies. They met at the U-12 European championships 1994.
Bacrot beat Ponomariov 2-0 in the 2007 world blitz championship. They drew both their games in the 2006 M-Tel masters. Ponomariov 1.5-0.5 against Bacrot at Biel 2004.
Anyones guess who wins this.
Bacrot last World Cup ended in third round by Karjakin. Yesterday he also enjoy a free game where Wang Yue late for his tie break game.
Shirov - Svidler
The big match of the round! They have played each other 26 times - Shirov leads 6-5 with 15 draws in all types of chess. Shirov beat Svidler at the Aerosvit tournament 2008, but since 2004 all their other games have been draws.
Svidler seems to be hanging on by a thread the last couple of matches. He needs to 'knuckle down' now though.
Pick your favourite.
I will favorite Shirov! Twice runner-up, in final he lost to Anand (2000) and Kamsky (2007). Reaching quarter final in 2002 (lost to Anand) and 1999 (lost to Nisipeanu). His best tournament this year is the MTel Master where he winning over Topalov, Carlsen, Ivanchuck etc. While Svidler is winning the Gibraltar 2009 but play much higher tournament than Shirov this year , like the FIDE Grandprix.
So - Malakhov
Wesley So is the 'headliner' in this tournament so far, knocking out, Guseinov, Ivanchuk and Kamsky. wow!!!! Wesley is causing great excitement around this website with the support from his army of fans. During this tournament I must admit to being a follower of Wesley, but I think the whole chess world is watching him now. He's having the tournament of his life, and good luck to the this young phenominal talent.
Malakhov knows what it's like to win big at a young age. He was the U-14 World champion. Malakhov is now a member of the 2700 club! That doesn't seem to phase Wesley though.
Although Malakhov seem not much known, he is rated above Kamsky. Compare to Ivanchuck’s inconsistency and Kamsky’s downfall this year, Malakhov is on the rising graphic. This is surely the toughest of So opponent so far. Many information tells that Malakhov is also have a non chess full time job, mean he is an “amateur”.
Wesley So is the only non-european participant now.
Age wise, Wesley So (b1993), Fabiano Caruana (b1992),Maxime VL (b1990), Sergey Karjakin (b1990). Gelfand is at 41 (b 1968), Shirov and Svidler is 37 and 33, while the rest in their 20s.

World Cup 2009-Round 3 Pairing Comments
Round 3
Gelfand - Polgar
Gelfand is enjoying his favorite status, playing a weaker opponent in two rounds. A good warm up but now his real challenge begin with Polgar as the next opponent. Compare to Polgar who only finished 2 classical game so far. Both met many times with statistic show Gelfand a positive score.
Lagrave - Yu Yangyi
Battle of youngster and more exciting this is like Asia vs Europea U20 player face off. They did not played in the recent World Junior at Argentina.
Jobava - Grischuk
Best from Georgia, Baadur “Baldur Gate” Jobava crushed Itturizaga in 30 moves Bogo Indian in round 2 while Grischuk eliminated “Drunken Master” who defended with Semi Slav yesterday. Strong pairing here.
Jakovenko – Areshchenko
Jakovenko comes with 2-0 against his Indian opponent while Areschenko from tie break. Both played a draw game before.
Bologan - Laznicka
Laznicka is the guy who upset Morozevich while Bologan finished Cheparinov by tie break.
Mamedyarov - Wang Hao
So far Mamedyarov having perfect score 4-0. I can’t find reference that they both played each other so both are into unknown territory.
Sakaev - Vitiugov
And Sakaev proved to be the solid player, eliminating Azeri Radjabov. His next challenger is Nikita Vitiugov whom he eliminated in 2007 world cup edition by tie break in round 1
Navara - Karjakin
Both spend another day for play off. Navara slip one rapid game to Shabalov due to surprised opening but then crushed Shaba 3.5-2.5 total. Database slightly favor Karjakin.
Li Chao - Gashimov
Gashimov enjoyed his high seed by playing easy opponent so far. But now he must take care of China men extra preparation for him. Looks like a team battle as Mamedyarov also facing the Chinese.
Caruana - Alekseev
Caruana eliminated two Cubans, Dominguez was losing on time in drawn position in tie break. Caruana is the last of Mr.President's recommended player. Both equal in the past.
Ponomariov - Motylev
And the former champion still heading well. Both met many times with Ponomariov leading.
Bacrot - Wang Yue
The highest seed from China. They both drawing each other from Chessgames database. Both games are the Petrov and Slav.
Svidler - Naiditsch
Naiditsch finished American dream Onischuk with a 20 moves miniature and enjoy his extra day for preparation. Svidler is now experienced more on how to handle a dark horse. They met many times with Svidler getting a plus point, but that’s when Naiditsch still a young boy. Still big chance for Svidler.
Tomashevsky – Shirov
When all the favorite seems fade away from the tournament turn out Shirov also want to maximalized his trip to Siberia by playing in tie break. Winning the tie break 3-0 Shirov is to challenge Tomashevsky who hardly get rid of Khalifman. They both met in 2008 with draw result.
Kamsky - So
Wesley So is trying to redefined the status “elite” in chess scene. His victory over Ivanchuck must be one of 2009 most successful chess story. Oppositely Kamsky still cold blood eliminating Antonio and Zhou Weiqi. Again this is the battle of favorite vs outsider, if So win, it will be remembered for a long time.. Meanwhile we do hope Chucky recovered soon.
Eljanov – Malakhov
Both “enjoyed” extra day exercise their rapid skill, they played a draw games in the past.

World Cup 2009-Round 2 pairing comments
Round 2 Chess World Cup pairing:
Gelfand, Boris (ISR) v Amonatov, Farrukh (TJK)
Boris Gelfand is the most lucky man, in game 2 where every underdogs play like 2012 is real, his opponent Obodchuck take a draw in 12 moves. Meanwhile real business is coming now with Amonatov of Tajikistan fame ready to challenge. Still Gelfand is the favorite here to go round 3.
Gashimov, Vugar (AZE) v Zhou, Jianchao (CHN)Zhou eliminated Raul Mamedov of Azeri, which is already a very good result. But now Gashimov ready to avenge for his cuontry men. Should be another fierce fighting here.
Morozevich, Alexander (RUS) v Laznicka, Viktor (CZE)Morozevich is beyond his Egyptian opponent in round 1, now Laznicka, whom I am not familiar with is going to test his luck against one of the world most interesting chess player.
Radjabov, Teimour (AZE) v Sakaev, Konstantin (RUS)
Sakaev is pretty solid player, should be a good test for Radjabov’s KID.
Jakovenko, Dmitry (RUS) v Sandipan, Chanda (IND)
Sandipan eliminated Kobalia, which is a good result, but can he survive Jakovenko, who is now Russian very top rating player.
Shirov, Alexei (ESP) v Fedorchuk, Sergey A. (UKR)
Fedorchuck give a shock by eliminating Sokolov, both Ivan and Shirov has a nasty chess playing style. This should give Shirov a little bit warning.
Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime (FRA) v Meier, Georg (GER)
Not sure about Meier but I think he is one of young generation from Georgia. A battle of youngster.
Alekseev, Evgeny (RUS) v Fressinet, Laurent (FRA)Alekseev should still a favorite here, Fressinet survived his young opponent Sgujirov.
Wang, Hao (CHN) v Ganguly, Surya Shekhar (IND)
The first China vs India, Wang Hao is as strong as the other Wang surname.
Malakhov, Vladimir (RUS) v Smirin, Ilia (ISR)Ilia Smirin eliminate hard opponent Ehlvest while Malakov handle more lower rated opponent in Round 1. Smirin is 40 and Malakhov is in his great 20s.
Rublevsky, Sergei (RUS) v Areshchenko, Alexander (UKR)
Both go round 2 with 1.5 score and should be a solid pairing with any of two have equal chance.
Motylev, Alexander (RUS) v Najer, Evgeniy (RUS)
Vitiugov, Nikita (RUS) v Milos, Gilberto (BRA)
Nisipeanu, Liviu-Dieter (ROU) v J Polgar (Hun)
My favorite pairing this round. International wide Polgar is well known but who can denied Nisipeanu as a very strong player? Nisipeanu show great chess this year while Polgar is a bit lack of practice. Last tournament in Holland prove that Polgar not yet in her peak.
These pairing decided after the round 1 play off:
Yu Yangyi - Mateusz Bartel
Yu is an international sensation after beating top seed Movsesian. He will have a supported from his eliminated country men like Bu and Hou Yifan to prepare against Bartel. Should be a tough opponent for Bartel.
Alexander Grischuk - Vladislav TkachievAnd Tkachiev survived another shock by Lee Quang Liem. Grischuk is enjoying 1 day off to face the “Drunken Master”.
Baadur Jobava - Eduardo Iturrizaga
Iturrizaga is another underdogs beating top seed Tiviakov.
Viktor Bologan - Ivan CheparinovNot a great show by Cheparinov, who need to go thru tie break before meeting Bologan. Again this is a nice pairing considering both are very strong name in chess.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov - Vadim MilovMilov prove to be a surprise participant, replacing Ni Hua and now he is eliminating great talent from India. Mamedyarov enjoy extra day after beating Kosteniuk 2-0.
Sergey Karjakin - Artyom Timofeev
David Navara - Alexander Shabalov
Both are tired after the tie break, so equal preparation here.
Yannick Pelletier - Li ChaoLi Chao enjoy extra preparation as Pelletier’s last round opponent also a Chinese men which should be standing near Li Chao now showing his notes.
Leinier Domínguez - Fabiano CaruanaFrom Blitz tournament Dominguez not showing the strength he was, but take note that Smerdon preparation is excellent. Caruana must trivial to see another Latin American as his opponent. Great pairing.
Ruslan Ponomariov - Varuzhan Akobian
Longest tie break by Akobian to eliminated Tregubov but now more stronger opponent wait him.
Wang Yue - Boris Savchenko
Étienne Bacrot - Krishnan Sasikiran
Both eliminated a Dutch player.
Peter Svidler - Tomi NybackStrong challenge for Svidler. Nyback is showing strong game against Andreikin.
Arkadij Naiditsch - Alexander Onischuk
Great pairing.
Evgeny Tomashevsky - Alexander Khalifman - russian derby
Vassily Ivanchuk - Wesley SoThe hottest pairing. I imagine this round like this. Ivanchuck is just like Ivanchuck enjoying his tournament and extra day after an easy opponent. While So is like Rambo who just come out from his most important battle ever. Some questions : Would Ivanchuck wear a mask? And a million dolar question for So fans, what is the correct opening for So to be prepared?
Gata Kamsky - Zhou Weiqi
And yet another sensation by China’s Zhou Weiqi. This let away interesting pairing between Kamsky and Sutovsky, but now they both can be friend again to met Zhou.
Pavel Eljanov - Ernesto Inarkiev
Some statistic:
Russia - 27 players only 16 survived
USA - 10 players, 4 go thru (Onischuck, Kamsky, Akobian, Shabalov)
China - 9 players 6 survive,
India - 7 players , 3 still there
Egypt-6 players then were none
Europe - 46
Asia - 11 (Tajikistan,Phillipine, 3 indians, 6 china)
South America - 2
North America & Carribean - 5
Trivia:
Zhou Weiqi 周唯奇 is using 周 character as his surname. which is same as Zhou Jianchao 周健超. Zhou is from the Zhou Dynasty character.
and Wang Yue 王玥 and Wang Hao 王皓 share 王 character. Wang = king
Tricky is Yu Yangyi 余泱漪 which surname Yu 余 is to be pronounced as Yee like in Yeehaa! While Li Chao 李超 is straight forward.
Both Li Chao and Zhou Jianchao share the same name "超" Chao mean superb.
Gelfand is the first to go 2nd round by normal route (Polgar the first by w/o)
Akobian the last to go 2nd round.
Wesley So give the best tie break score 3-0 against Gadir Guseinov.

World Cup 2009 Round 1 Pairing and commentary
Thursday, November 19, 2009
World Blitz Champion 2009 is Carlsen

Several notes to mentioned :
On Day 1 top standing are : Anand, Carlsen and Karpov. So surprises were belong to Karpov who managed to defeated Carlsen.
Day 2 Carlsen already catch up with Anand for no.1 and Karjakin also make big loop into 3rd rank. Notable here are Kosteniuk defeating Polgar in 2nd bout (the first one won by Polgar), and in round 17 Carlsen down Anand.
Day 3 Carlsen started with Ponomariov defeating Carlsen, and Anand won against Svidler. This make a bit manuever in first position. Only after round 40 where Polgar defeated Anand where Carlsen secured first position by collecting 30.5 where Anand only 27 for 1 round spare.
Kosteniuk finished last, quite normal as suggested by her rating (the lowest). But her victims port folio quite impressive : Carlsen, Anand, Aronian, Morozevich and many else.
