I wonder if both federation (Aussie and NZ) can coordinated each other and make the tournament's schedule in such a way that they are not happening at the same time. Perhaps both Australian Open and New Zealand Open can make a twin Oceania tourney. Perhaps with this arrangement, the region can attracted more "European" chess players. With two events, the journey to the southern part of the world will worth considering.

Partai Catur Jadul Jacob Baay vs Frank Crowl - Australian Chess Championship 1951

As my post earlier, we come to discover new game by Jacob G. Baay, who was a strong Dutch chess player living in Indonesia during the World World II era. You can check his other game in this post. Jacob G. Baay earn his reputation playing in Java island of Indonesia during that time. This game was recovered from the Sidney Morning Herald, dated May 13th, 1951. The chess column editor was Australian master Gregory Koshnitsky.

The full text of the article:

The Victorian chess champion, Frank (Arthur) Crowl, has been often compared to the great Russo-Danish player and thinker, Aaron Nimzovitch, whose original ideas on chess strategy shocked the conservative school of his day.

Like Nimzovitch, Crowl is a great strategist and some of his games have been acclaimed as masterpieces of subtlety and ingenuity, but it is only just that both players should suffer from the same weakness-inability to cope with direct methods. Nimzovitch's genius was ineffective against Lasker and Alekhine, while Crowl is notoriously weak against our attacking players when they get positions which suit them.

In the following game, the visiting Dutch master brilliantly exploits a weak move in the opening to inflict on Crowl a crushing defeat.

Jacob G. Baay chess games, the Sidney Morning Heral chess column by Gregory Koshnitsky 1951

Jacob G. Baay is chess player who lives in Indonesia in the World War II period. He continue to play in Java island, Indonesia, and make a fame in the region. Here is a newspaper report from Australia about his participation in the continent's Australian Championship 1951. He was playing George Karoly, strong local master. The games deciphered from The Sunday Herald, Sidney May 27th 1951, editor and annotation by Gregory Koshnitsky, a local master as well.

See Jacob G. Baay games vs Frank Crowl from The Sidney Morning Herald here.

Partai Catur Jadul Nainggolan vs Ong Yok Hwa 1966

The Canberra Times dated 21 July 1966 put in a chess games between Indonesian player of the 60s. White was Nainggolan and black was Indonesian famous player Ong Yok Hwa aka Eddy Rusli. In this chess column by The Canberra Times, the editor Mautner, comments on the game which played on Pirc Defence. Black successfully penetrated White's centre because of the d-files weaknesses by White. It was reported that Ong Yok Hwa was Challenger Tournament winner of 1965, but not detailed on what "Challenger Tournament" it was.

Partai Catur Jadul Lajos Portisch vs Hamdan - Adelaide 1971

Trace of Indonesian chess player in Australia found in this chess column from The Canberra Times, 10 February 1971. The article titled "Crime and Punishment" wrote by George Stern highlight two chess games for its adventurous theme, the first game was Australian players John Alps vs Baker. Then the second game was Lajos Portisch vs Hamdan, from Indonesia. In this QGD game, Lajos Portisch simply get a nice mating pattern on King's side and the Indonesian player simply did not find the best defensive system against it. See this nice, rather instructive game by the Hungarian grandmaster.

The tournament in context was probably Australia Open 1971 held in Adelaide. The winner was Lajos Portisch by half point ahead Walter Browne. From the article the standing was:

Adelaide - Karlis Lidum Tournament / Australia Open 1971 (?)
Final Standing:
1. Lajos Portisch
2-4 Walter Browne
Florin Gheorgiu
Lothar Schmidt
5. Alexander Matanovic

Queenstown Chess Classic and Irene Sukandar

A resort town of New Zealand, Queenstown, was hosting their third Chess Classic event from 15th-23rd January 2012 at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown. The town is famous for being the location of several top end Hollywood motion pictures such as The Lord of The Ring trilogy.

In this Chess classic event, three players climbed to the top and ended up sharing the highest points, hence sharing first place. Australia's GM Darryl Johansen, GM Li Chao and GM Zhao Jun managed to be those first three. In the last round, GM Darryl Johansen won the thrilling sicilian game as black verses GM Gawain Jones. The game had been pushed into the narrow battlefield at the Black's king corner, but Black managed to escape the pressure and pulled out the counter attack. Following game are GM Gawain Jones vs GM Darryl Johansen.

The tournament also marked a succesful trip for Indonesian WGM Irene K. Sukandar. Flying and play in high spirit , as she always shared on her social network, IKS managed to score a positive 6.5 out of this nine rounds event. Only losing point to higher rated opponent , to GM Gawain Jones and GM Zhao Jun, IKS managed to score point notably against IM Stephen Soloman of Australia and WGM Nadig Kruttika from India. This let her to get the 2449 performance point from her 2325 Fide rating.

Irene also scored a nice international exposure, thanks to a report by WGM Nadig Kruttika on Chessbase.com. A photo of Irene with lovely friend, chessplayer/photographer Vivian Gu Xiaobing.

Australian Open Chess 2011

Firstable it is a hard time for Aussie staying in Brisbane QLD because of the notorious flood on their riverside area. I hope there will be encouragements for those those affected. Moving south, there was Australian Open Chess Championships 2011 happening in Cammeray NSW. This year edition finished with three players on tie. GM Zhao Zongyuan , GM George Xie Wendi and Moulthun Ly altogether finished at 8.5/11. The chess result page give the number 1 spot for GM Zhao Zongyuan, but I read on Shaun's blog it is George Xie to win the tie break (?). Official site.

Compared to last year, this year edition looks a bit less strong, only Zhao Zongyuan holding a GM. But it is also hard for him to pace a smooth way to the top. He was lost (only) ot FM Ikeda Junta, in a tight Sicilian Kan game below. White is losing on time (as noted in PGN file), in maybe a very interesting unbalance late middle game:

Australian Championship 2010-Zhao Wins

Australian Chess Champions 2010 is reaching final. Both GM Zhao Zong Yuan and IM George Xie have been secured their first or second position way before final round. A standing before final round says both are at 9 points while closest pursuider (Gawain Jones, Vladimir Smirnov and Darryl Johansen) all at 6.5 point!

GM Zhao Zong Yuan is a Beijing-born and now an Australian citizen studying pharmacy, he is age 24 while George Xie Wendi is at 25 in 2010. And by winning his last round against FM Tomek Rej in a tactical 1.d4 and a quick win, Zhao Zong Yuan is the Australian Champion for 2010 edition.

IM George Xie is also secured a second GM norm and FM Vladimir Smirnov gets an IM norm, according to The Closet Grandmaster blog. But in final round IM George Xie Wendi finally lost to IM Soloman Stephen in a Sicilian Game.

Speaking about Sicilian this tournament contained a lot of them. Most trivial is everybody seems like to test the regular chess writer IM Gary Lane in this opening. Gary Lane encounter about 6 games where his Black side opponent reply 1..c5 for his 1.e4. IM Vladimir Feldman is the last one to test this to Lane, in a now popular Dragdorf variation.

Australian Championship and World Team 2010

Still happening in Australia is their Championship started this week. The tournament over live games in my working hour, so good entertainment in my quite first working week.
