The 2009 edition of World Cup concluded with a victory by Boris Gelfand over Ruslan Ponomariov. In final round, the two player exercised four classical games all ended in a draw. The match then gone to a tie break system. In opposite, this rapid and blitz time control gives much pleasure as both defeated each other.

Pecatur Isreal Boris Gelfand akhirnya memenangkan Piala Dunia Catur 2009. Runner up adalah mantan juara Ruslan Ponomariov dari Ukraina. Boris mengalahkan Ruslan melalui 4 partai catur klasik, 4 partai catur cepat dan juga butuh 4 partai catur kilat karena kondisi imbang. Di dua partai terakhir Boris mengalahkan Ruslan jadi otomatis dialah pemenang tahun ini. Dengan demikian Boris masuk menjadi satu peserta Kejuaraan Kandidat tahun tahun mendatang. World Cup 2009 Final-London Day 1
Finally a final for World Cup 2009. Boris Gelfand play best round ever, dismissing Karjakin chances to see the final 2-0. While Malakhov still made it to tie break and win one rapid game, before sent home by Ponomariov after Pono won all remain rapid games. Final semifinal result here.
This leave to a final pairing, Boris Gelfand - Ruslan Ponomariov, Boris is seeded 1 and Pono no. 7 in this tournament. They met many times with Ponomariov in favourable score. Their last game was in Tal Memorial and ended 1/2-1/2. For Boris this will be the second best shot to challenge the World Champion after he also played in 2007 Candidate match. While Ponomariov is looking for the second knock out style title. In 2002 after Pono win, some chess politic manuever caused his bid to match the reign Champion never really had changes. Looking forward for this face off!
Meanwhile, London Chess Classic just started. The event has been highly anticipated at least in CHESS Magazine where they published ads maybe half year prior. Total of eight GM, span from Carlsen to David Howell going to played each other. With Hikaru Nakamura maybe the second most interesting player the chess community wants to see. Round 1 see Carlsen surprised Kramnik in English opening and take strong 1-0. Luke McShane also won (strange) game with Short in 160+ moves. The rest is a draw :

Partai pertama dengan buah hitam Gelfand memukul putih yang bermain 1.e4 tapi 2.Bc4 untuk menghindari Petroff nya Gelfand. Putih bermain resiko dan akhirnya hitam berhasil memetik kemenangan. Sementara di game ke dua, Gelfand memilih langkah yang lebih aman di pertahanan Gambit Menteri di tolak , tetapi hitam yang musti menang kembali bermain resiko mengakibatkan putih dapat menyerang hitam dengan indah. World Cup 2000-Semi Final
Result for Quarter final here.
Mamedyarov keep his no tie break record clean as he was eliminated 1.5-0.5 by Karjakin. In their game 2, Mame with white considered only one tiny chance to equalized, but the game went to an opposite bishop endgame with rook then dully drawn.
Svidler resign the first game to Malakhov after the later underpromoted a pawn into Knight to give a nice check. White then forced into mate and quickly resign. After this Svidler try a KID as black but Malakhov maintained good equality and Svidler quickly declared a draw.
The two tie breaker, first is Ponomariov who fast enough to give Gashimov time trouble in all games. In rapid 1, Gashimov quite winning but blundered a lot in time trouble, rapid two he burned a lot of time and lost badly (=blundered a rook). Rapid 3 after an uncommon opening Gashimov again powerless to win the game and admit a draw.
Jakovenko also clueless to Gelfand, the White. Both play a draw in rapid 1, but Gelfand turn the table in rapid 2 and 3.

Gelfand born in 1968 his GM title was earned in 1989 while at that time Karjakin still one year to go before come out of this world. Meanwhile Karjakin is a "fast" one by 2002 already called a GM, he is also fast in other thing like get married in age 19 (2009, wikipedia), not sure how old Gelfand on this. Conclusion, age different not much give a pattern. Although in other sport this age different is like Maradona vs Ronaldinho , or Liem Swei King vs Taufik Hidayat (ok, they are Badminton player).

After his pairing with Wesley So he was blessed as one of popular chess player now. He is working daily as a scientist. Played a Slav defence.
Ponomariov is a former winner of this knock out tournament, so he has the experience. Played fast in rapid as shown in his match to Gashimov. His record of meeting Malakhov has only once, Ponomariov vs V Malakhov ½-½ 2009 LIII Campeonato D15 Slav. At least, Pono will be aware of his opponent familiar opening and not fall to Malakhov's preparation, which is quite lethal, plus Malakhov got one day extra to do it.

Boris Gelfand 2758 – Dmitry Jakovenko 2736
Boris eliminated Maxime by 1 blitz game while Jakovenko stopped Grischuk by 2 blitz games. Grischuk commented that Jako knews more his secret than him. Now with Gelfand they both played many times before in all time control, the chessgames database give Jakovenko a plus score.
Opening wise in this tournament, Gelfand play 1.d4 , 1.c4 and 1.Nf3 and replied 1.e4 with e5 exclusively, stat including rapid and blitz. So far no opponent give him a 1.d4 yet. Jakovenko alternating 1.e4 and 1.d4 in this tournament, replied 1.e4 with e5 and 1.d4 with Nf6,.. e6 reaching Gruenfeld and KID like.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov 2719 – Sergey Karjakin 2723
So far Mame is the only player enjoyed the most free days since he never went into tie break yet. Karjakin also has one free day as he finished Vitiugov without tie break. They are trading many games before in all time control, equal score from database. This is the first opponent to Mamedyarov who had a better rating.
Mame got varied opening so far while Karjakin employed mostly 1.e4.

With two Azeri in separate bracket, the all Azeri final is possible, giving this a boost to both Gashimov and Mame spirit. Gashimov experienced two hard fight from Li Chao and Caruana and his luck again to be tested by former Champion Ponomariov. In Ponomariov side, he finished Bacrot by 1 rapid games. Gashimov has one winning classical game with Pono in 2008 but in recent Tal Blitz both are equal. The rating still suggested Gashimov the favorite side.
Gashimov exclusive using 1.e4 so far , Ponomariov replied to this is mainly a Ruy Lopez , stat is from this tournament only.

The outsider, Malakhov is ‘only’ 6 point to be considered as the 2700 group. Malakhov aware of his young opponent, applies a correct strategy to bring the round 4 into tie break and play with Wesley So’s confident. His tie break also the strongest 3-0 to bring home Wesley So fantastic journey so far. Peter Svidler will need to take care of Malakhov’s underdog advantage so far. Peter finished Shirov without tie break and still the strong favorite here. They also played many times with Peter on upper score.
Svidler has a balance 1.e4 and 1.d4 opening in this tournament while Malakhov experience all types of opening so far. Malakhov repertoire to 1.e4 is a Ruy Lopez while prefer Slav defence for 1.d4.
The youngest player now fall to Karjakin.

World Cup Round 4-Pairing Comments

Round 4 pairing is up, with lesser pairing mean more comments can be put in for each the pairing. Here some from chessgames.com’s member ezzy and some trivia I added (in blue color text).
Vachier Lagrave - Gelfand
What a year for Vachier-Lagrave. World junior champion and Biel international winner! has knocked out 2 Chinese players in the world cup, and his reward for a great year is a pairing with the top seed in the tournament Boris Gelfand. They both played 2 draws against each other at the Biel tournament this year.
Meanwhile, Gelfand also had a nice year, having winning the ACP World rapid cup, beating Svidler in final, although Svidler blunders help Gelfand clinched the title. The age different is span quite wide, so also a battle of generation here.
Grischuk - Jakovenko
Grischuk hasn't beat Jakovenko in classical chess, but he beat Jakovenko twice in the world blitz championship this year. Jakovenko therefore will NOT want this to go to tiebreak. Close call this one.
Both had been pushed until tiebreak yesterday so equal preparation.
Laznicka - Mamedyarov
Laznicka is the 61 seed and lowest rated player left in. He's playing 'out of his skin' in this tournament though, beating Morozevich 2-0 in the 2nd round. Another tough challenge against Mamedyarov who is the only player not yet to go to a tiebreak. They have met each other twice before with 1 draw and 1 win for Mamedyarov. Mamedyarov will be the favourite, but so was Morozevich.
Mame is doing a Fischer-like tournament so far, Wang Hao is his strongest opponent so far in term of rating.
Karjakin - Vitiugov
Only played each other once, and that was this year, and a 21 move draw.
Vitiugov seems to be a steadily improving 22 year old. This is his second world cup and usually qualifies through good performances in the European championships, where 3 years running he finished only 1/2pt behind the winners score.
I can't see further than Karjakin though, A major winner this year at Corus!
Gashimov - Caruana
First ever meeting for these two. Gashimov beat 2 Chinese players and Caruana knocked out 2 Cuban's on their way to 4th round. Wesley is causing great excitement around this website with the support from his army of fans. During this tournament I must admit to being a follower of Wesley, but I think the whole chess world is watching him now. He's having the tournament of his life, and good luck to the this young phenominal talent.
Malakhov knows what it's like to win big at a young age. He was the U-14 World champion. Malakhov is now a member of the 2700 club! That doesn't seem to phase Wesley though.
Although Malakhov seem not much known, he is rated above Kamsky. Compare to Ivanchuck’s inconsistency and Kamsky’s downfall this year, Malakhov is on the rising graphic. This is surely the toughest of So opponent so far. Many information tells that Malakhov is also have a non chess full time job, mean he is an “amateur”.

What a year for Vachier-Lagrave. World junior champion and Biel international winner! has knocked out 2 Chinese players in the world cup, and his reward for a great year is a pairing with the top seed in the tournament Boris Gelfand. They both played 2 draws against each other at the Biel tournament this year.
Meanwhile, Gelfand also had a nice year, having winning the ACP World rapid cup, beating Svidler in final, although Svidler blunders help Gelfand clinched the title. The age different is span quite wide, so also a battle of generation here.
Grischuk - Jakovenko
Grischuk hasn't beat Jakovenko in classical chess, but he beat Jakovenko twice in the world blitz championship this year. Jakovenko therefore will NOT want this to go to tiebreak. Close call this one.
Both had been pushed until tiebreak yesterday so equal preparation.
Laznicka - Mamedyarov
Laznicka is the 61 seed and lowest rated player left in. He's playing 'out of his skin' in this tournament though, beating Morozevich 2-0 in the 2nd round. Another tough challenge against Mamedyarov who is the only player not yet to go to a tiebreak. They have met each other twice before with 1 draw and 1 win for Mamedyarov. Mamedyarov will be the favourite, but so was Morozevich.
Mame is doing a Fischer-like tournament so far, Wang Hao is his strongest opponent so far in term of rating.
Karjakin - Vitiugov
Only played each other once, and that was this year, and a 21 move draw.
Vitiugov seems to be a steadily improving 22 year old. This is his second world cup and usually qualifies through good performances in the European championships, where 3 years running he finished only 1/2pt behind the winners score.
I can't see further than Karjakin though, A major winner this year at Corus!

World Cup 2009-Round 3 Pairing Comments

Gelfand - Polgar
Gelfand is enjoying his favorite status, playing a weaker opponent in two rounds. A good warm up but now his real challenge begin with Polgar as the next opponent. Compare to Polgar who only finished 2 classical game so far. Both met many times with statistic show Gelfand a positive score.
Lagrave - Yu Yangyi
Battle of youngster and more exciting this is like Asia vs Europea U20 player face off. They did not played in the recent World Junior at Argentina.
Jobava - Grischuk
Best from Georgia, Baadur “Baldur Gate” Jobava crushed Itturizaga in 30 moves Bogo Indian in round 2 while Grischuk eliminated “Drunken Master” who defended with Semi Slav yesterday. Strong pairing here.
Jakovenko – Areshchenko
Jakovenko comes with 2-0 against his Indian opponent while Areschenko from tie break. Both played a draw game before.
Bologan - Laznicka
Laznicka is the guy who upset Morozevich while Bologan finished Cheparinov by tie break.
Mamedyarov - Wang Hao
So far Mamedyarov having perfect score 4-0. I can’t find reference that they both played each other so both are into unknown territory.
Sakaev - Vitiugov
And Sakaev proved to be the solid player, eliminating Azeri Radjabov. His next challenger is Nikita Vitiugov whom he eliminated in 2007 world cup edition by tie break in round 1

Both spend another day for play off. Navara slip one rapid game to Shabalov due to surprised opening but then crushed Shaba 3.5-2.5 total. Database slightly favor Karjakin.
Li Chao - Gashimov
Gashimov enjoyed his high seed by playing easy opponent so far. But now he must take care of China men extra preparation for him. Looks like a team battle as Mamedyarov also facing the Chinese.
Caruana - Alekseev
Caruana eliminated two Cubans, Dominguez was losing on time in drawn position in tie break. Caruana is the last of Mr.President's recommended player. Both equal in the past.
Ponomariov - Motylev
And the former champion still heading well. Both met many times with Ponomariov leading.

Svidler - Naiditsch
Naiditsch finished American dream Onischuk with a 20 moves miniature and enjoy his extra day for preparation. Svidler is now experienced more on how to handle a dark horse. They met many times with Svidler getting a plus point, but that’s when Naiditsch still a young boy. Still big chance for Svidler.
Tomashevsky – Shirov
When all the favorite seems fade away from the tournament turn out Shirov also want to maximalized his trip to Siberia by playing in tie break. Winning the tie break 3-0 Shirov is to challenge Tomashevsky who hardly get rid of Khalifman. They both met in 2008 with draw result.
Kamsky - So
Wesley So is trying to redefined the status “elite” in chess scene. His victory over Ivanchuck must be one of 2009 most successful chess story. Oppositely Kamsky still cold blood eliminating Antonio and Zhou Weiqi. Again this is the battle of favorite vs outsider, if So win, it will be remembered for a long time.. Meanwhile we do hope Chucky recovered soon.
Eljanov – Malakhov

Round 2 Chess World Cup pairing:

Boris Gelfand is the most lucky man, in game 2 where every underdogs play like 2012 is real, his opponent Obodchuck take a draw in 12 moves. Meanwhile real business is coming now with Amonatov of Tajikistan fame ready to challenge. Still Gelfand is the favorite here to go round 3.
Gashimov, Vugar (AZE) v Zhou, Jianchao (CHN)Zhou eliminated Raul Mamedov of Azeri, which is already a very good result. But now Gashimov ready to avenge for his cuontry men. Should be another fierce fighting here.
Morozevich, Alexander (RUS) v Laznicka, Viktor (CZE)Morozevich is beyond his Egyptian opponent in round 1, now Laznicka, whom I am not familiar with is going to test his luck against one of the world most interesting chess player.

World Cup 2009-Round 1 Day 1
Complete result for round 1 day 1 see here. I better write something on day 1 result while I have time in weekend. Day 1 see a cry out of fans as the Live transmission blackout in early phase of the round, so please mind that some of games are incomplete or maybe error. A bit trivia on round 1:
-Judith Polgar is the first to qualified for next round, her opponent GM Dusko Pavasovic failed to show up. Some say due to illness other say he just failed to reach the city.

World Cup 2009 - 1st Round with comments
Finally the biggest chess event this year, Chess World Cup 2009 Khanty-Mansiysk is coming in this month. First round pairing is predictable from the list of participant, only that Ni Hua is off (he will have to play in London in December) and replaced by Vadim Milov of Swiss. First round pairing, with my humble commentary on all 64 pairings:
1 GM Gelfand, Boris ISR - 128 IM Obodchuk, Andrei RUS
Should be an easy win by Gelfand.
2. GM Gashimov, Vugar AZE - 127 IM Sarwat, Walaa EGY
The Egypts are in high number participating here. But Gashimov should be on top of moral after bring his country to win the Euro'09 and reaching no.6 in latest rating.

An unlucky day for the sole Canadian master. Jean will met the most Svidler, who is most likely a semifinalist.

The first interesting pairing so far by two big names. Quite a pity pairing as it will be good for both to go thru 2nd round. Rating wise Shak should overcome Alexa, but at least she is Women Champion and played well this month. And I am always an Alex fan. Few days ago Shak managed to blitz out Alexa in Tal Blitz event.

Also an interesting pairing, Shirov is in roller coaster period this year. To much fire may cause Shirov a round. Shirov had quite good record in this type of qualification, being runner up twice before losing to Anand and Kamsky.

A bit unfortunely fo Smerdon, new GM from Aussie as Dominguez is also a very strong GM from New World.

2009 Asian Zone 3.2 - Asian's Last Ticket
Another Zonal qualification to World Cup happening in Delhi, India. The Asian Zone 3.2 is the last to decide who will qualified for this coming chess World Cup at Khanty-Mansiysk for Asia.
GM Rahman Ziaur 2538 of Bangladesh is highest rate here. But a number of Indian's GMs like GM Deepan Chakkravarthy 2506, GM Neelotpal Das 2474, and GM Thipsay Praveen 2446 are among the 13 players competing. Meanwhile at Women section, seven players playing round robin. IM Tania Sachdev of India is at top standing after round 5.

Asia Zone 3.3 R.5 - Pinoys Derby
The Pinoys are coming up strong in Asia Zone 3.3 Chess Championship, after round 4, with GM Darwin Laylo and GM Wesley So top the current standing. Both will play a derby match on round five. On how and why GM Darwin Laylo should really consider to take Wesley So seriously is analysed by chessheroes, a victory over So mean a night worth of fame today. Well, this is something that missed by Singaporean, FM Timothy Chan Wei-Xuan, he lost to So on round 4. GM Zhang Zhong also slowed down and accumulated 3 points after a drew against GM Mark Paraqua and GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son.
Indonesia's only contestant on Men, GM Megaranto Susanto lost again to Vietnamese black horse, Bao Khoa (2161) and draw to Vo Thanh Ninh (2340). This give Susanto a 2 1/2 point. Notable Bao Khoa was defeating 2 GMs and 1 IM, before slow down by GM Darwin Laylo on round 4.

Rising star WCM Medina Warda Aulia with 2 points , her performance so far are 1 win over WFM and 2 draws over a WFM and WGM. WFM Dewi Aa Citra currently accumulated only 1 1/2 point. David Smerdon Wins Oceania Zonal 2009
Oceania Zonal which served as qualifier for future World Cup at Khanty Mansiysk was won by GM-elected David Smerdon (2489) . The winner is one point ahead of his teenage tailer FM James Morris (2114), who made a good tournament ahead of top seeded GM Zhao Zong-Yuan 2583 with 6.5 points. FM James Morris earned his IM title from this tournament as well.On women section, popular Aussie WIM Arianne Caoili (2172) also a point ahead her closest rival, IM Irina Berezina (2252) of Australia. Caoili made 8 points of 9 rounds ahead of mostly a below 2000 rated opponents.

Juara Zone Oceania 2009 adalah IM David Smerdon. Sang juara adalah calon GM. Remaja berbakat FM James Morris ada di peringkat kedua dan berhasil mengantongi gelar IM. David Smerdon akan turut serta menuju Piala Dunia di Siberia akhir tahun ini.
Di bagian puteri WIM Arianne Caoili, yang lagi kencan dengan super GM Levon Aronian, menjadi juara dengan nilai 8 dari 9 babak. Rival terdekatnya adalah IM Irina Berezina dengan nilai 7. Peringkat ketiga adalah
WFM Sue Maroroa dari New Zealand dengan nilai 6, mbak ini adalah teman wanita dari GM Gawain Jones dari Inggris. Di salah satu babak dia terpaksa mengundurkan diri dari permainan karena diperingati oleh wasit agar tidak berbicara dengan rekan pria-nya.
